With my motorbike, I keep the throttle and revs low until I've ridden 10 km (6 miles). A car mechanic in my shooting club told me that's very important. He said: "People don't know, what they are doing to their engine, when they don't warm it up."
It works: Oil consumption of my motorbike is near zero. My car went 150,000 miles. Now, it only needs 0,4 gal of oil per 10,000 miles, power still like new (measured by top speed).
