Another option that would likely be superior to black magic marker is Duracoat, which can apparently be obtained in a DIY spray kit for about $35.

Two things come to mind looking at Les's pics. Chuck Haggard's flash bang .357 ammo and George Thorogood:

This is a thirty-eight pistol. Built on a forty-five frame, Shoots tombstone bullets. And a ball and chain.

    Regarding the marker bit....

I think the camo finish was maybe Duracoat...

The frame is plastic, and the sharpie seemed to hold up well to solvents. And it was cheap.

So... I blasted the remaining 38-44 Hi Speed ammo I had out of the LCR and chrono'd some.

    Federal 129gr Hydra-Shok JHP +P (P38HS1) averaged 885 fps with a SD 8 fps.

SuperVel 90gr Super Snub JHP +P averaged 1228 fps with a SD of 22 fps.

Winchester 130gr FMJ averaged 760 fps with a SD of 17 fps.

Remington 158gr LRN averaged 709 fps with a SD of 5 fps.

Remington 158gr SJHP Hi-Speed averaged 850 fps with a SD of 24 fps.

Remington 125gr SJHP Hi-Speed averaged 958 fps with a SD of 26 fps.

The 158 Hi Speed's felt like a hammer hitting your hand. I shot the entire remaining box while giggling... That getting close to .357 magnum performance in a short barrel.

Are those the .38/44 loads? Because the fire ball and report sound way more impressive!

I also chrono'd some N110 loads through my 2.5" Model 66. 158 grain XTPs at a starting book load and got 1250 fps. I was pretty shocked they went that fast. Very little fire ball too.

Yup - those were the ones! Stout stuff...

The Federal 129 +p was a pussycat compared to those...
