    Warren Miller, Rest in Powder

I didn't realize we lost Warren Miller last Wednesday. His life probably didn't have much visibility for most but if you were a ski-bum kid dreaming of the winter then Miller was your prophet. When the latest Warren Miller film came to town you knew it was time to get your gear ready and assess your funds to see how many times you may have to sneak into the lift lines. I know he contributed to the progress of outdoor and action sports cinematography and whatnot but most of us will remember his narration, humor, and advocacy for snow sports.

    Seattle Times Obituary/Bio Piece:

Warren A. Miller, the pioneering snow-sports filmmaker whose infectious zeal for the “pure freedom” associated with skiing, snowboarding and other pursuits inspired multiple generations of adventure seekers around the globe, died Wednesday at his home on Orcas Island. He was 93.

A quick-witted, self-taught filmmaker who first filmed his own scenes for an annual self-narrated ski movie shown in small venues, Mr. Miller produced more than 500 adventure-sport films. His name, carried forward in a sports-media company, Warren Miller Entertainment, from which he was disassociated in his later years, became synonymous with snow sports across North America.

To his legions of fans, Mr. Miller’s annual ski flick amounted to cinematic manna from heaven — an overdue shot of cold air and deep snow to stoke the fires within winter warriors who had suffered through the long, hot months of snowless summer. The films, most of which began with jaw-dropping alpine-ski sequences, featuring top skiers and snowboarders delivered by helicopter to some knee-knocking heights and set to a pounding rock-music beat, never failed to produce hooting, shouting and delirium among the snow-deprived faithful.

The pumped-up atmosphere, Mr. Miller told The Seattle Times in 1985, was like “showing a porno film on an aircraft carrier six days out of port.”

    Rest in powder, Mr Miller!

Many a Warren Miller movie was enjoyed the night before, or the nights in-between countless ski trips in my life.

Yup, I was a yearly pilgrim to the campus theatre to check out his films. Good body of work.

My late step brother was featured in several Warren Miller movies. There is a tribute to him in Like There’s No Tomorrow. Like many, I grew up watching Warren Miller movies and waiting for winter.

    RIP Mr Miller.

Yes Warren Miller made some great films, his film crew went to places no one had ever gone. Hopefully Warren is enjoying making turns in the POW of an Endless Winter.

Spent my youth in Salt Lake City, grew up skiing the deep stuff. Mr. Miller's films were always standing room only when they arrived in town. Big following he had in the area.

    R.I.P., sir.

Always loved the movies and it was the start of the season. Search Netflix and Amazon for some. Movies to watch in honor and couldn't find any. I have vhs still but no DVDs.

Back in the day we used to go to the Gammage every year to watch his movies. Good times! RIP Warren Millero

ETA I read the article and watched the video. Damned if there isn’t some powder in the air...

Just a dog chauffeur that used to hold the dumb end of the leash.
