    RFI - Safety boots/shoes

I started a new job at the beginning of the year and am really enjoying it. I mostly am sitting at a desk but I often need to go to the shop floor to troubleshoot problems and help out with stuff. This requires me to get some safety boots or shoes. Looking for something comfy and more like a hiking boot or shoe. I can use composite or metallic safety toe. Let me know what you guys prefer as I am not too familiar with what's best in the world of work boots.

Keen makes a line of safety shoes that are like their hiking boots. I have a pair in my cube.

I prefer full 8-9 inch leather with composite toe, but I’m weird. I tear up footwear , and won’t consider a boot without a welted sole. I’ve had too many glued on ones fail while the actual tread and rest of the boot was still fine, leading to a shortened life span and spending money twice over for no reason.

    Thanks for the Keen mention.

For a casual office/production setting I am kinda liking these casual Keens.

ETA: However the reviews are not great for these.

I've been wearing safety boots for 20 years+. Keens are hit or miss per individual from what I have seen. These are discontinued but you might be able to find them in stock online.
Wolverine W10489. By far the most comfortable I have ever owned. Plus lightweight and breathable electrical insulated waterproof and slip resistant. I am bummed they are discontinued, I have no idea what I will replace mine with.

The Keens are GTG. Their line of socks is also worth checking out, and pretty regularly on sale.

I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. I can spend a couple of minutes to all day in the shop. I have a pair of Keen Detroit Low. I can wear them all day and even wear them outside of work.

Note: While most of the outside of the Detroit is leather, the tongue and a couple of strips (see picture at link) are nylon or some synthetic. If you are welding or cutting, or around it, that material can and probably will penetrate the tongue of the shoe. If I have to spend a lot of time welding, I prefer traditional boots. In the machine shop or assembly shop, Keens work great.

I have a pair of New Balance. Very comfortable but they are full leather and get a little hot in the summer.

It's probably not the look you want, but when I was doing a lot of factory visits the most comfortable steel-toe shoes I found were the thick-soled Doc Martens. Looked clunky, but for me they were stand-all-day comfortable.

    I haven't tried the Keens.
