Video: Bullet from suspect’s gun stopped by officer's holstered TASER during shootout

“From our estimation, had [the suspect’s] bullet struck just a few inches away, it could easily have gravely wounded, or even killed, the officer," police said

PUNA, Hawaii — A Hawaii police officer narrowly avoided injury when a bullet hit his holstered TASER during a foot pursuit.

On Sept. 22, Puna patrol officers responded to a report regarding an argument between two brothers involving an armed suspect at a house, police said in a news release provided to Big Island Video News.

When officers arrived at the residence, a 30-year-old man fled on foot with a handgun.

Officers completed their investigation and identified the suspect as Kaena Kaohu. Officers also confirmed that Kaohu had an active warrant for his arrest.

A search for Kaohu continued overnight, but officers were unable to locate him.

On Saturday afternoon, officers received information that Kaohu might be hiding at a residence in a neighborhood. The homeowner gave officers permission to search the property.

While searching the property, the two uniformed officers saw Kaohu running from the residence toward the wooded area in the back. The officers instructed Kaohu to show his hands and to "stop right now."

About 30 seconds into the foot pursuit, the suspect fired a single shot at officers.

The officers continued asking Kaohu to put the gun down, but Kaohu turned away and walked back into the woods.

As the officers took cover behind some trees, they again told Kaohu to put his hands up. The suspect instead brought the gun up with both hands, assumed a shooting stance and pointed the gun at the officers.

Kaohu then fired at least one round at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect in the exchange.

No officers were injured in the shootout, but an officer thought he had either been directly hit by a bullet or by a ricochet during the shootout, Big Island Video News reports.

Investigators believe the bullet struck the officer’s TASER holster.

"From our estimation, had Kaohu’s bullet struck just a few inches away, it could easily have gravely wounded, or even killed, the officer," police said in a news release.

San Francisco Chinese Consulate Attacker Gets Shot After Swinging Knife at Officer

San Francisco, California — On Monday, October 9, 2023, at approximately 3:09 p.m. San Francisco Police Officers responded to the area of Geary Blvd. and Laguna St. on a report of a vehicle that crashed into a building. The suspect identified as 31-year-old Zhanyuan Yang, rammed a car into the visa office of the Chinese consulate. San Francisco Police Acting Commander Mark Im said Zhanyuan Yang, stood against a wall hiding a knife in his right hand.

He says Yang then rotated toward a police sergeant and the security guard, exposing the knife and made "multiple, rapid, downward swinging motions with the knife towards the direction of the sergeant and the security guard." The officer then opened fire after Yang allegedly failed to comply with orders to get on the ground. Yang was taken to a hospital, where he died. A 911 caller reported to police dispatchers that Yang was armed with gun, though officers never found a firearm. They did however find two .40 caliber fired cartridge casings. A crossbow was found in his car, police said. Authorities have not revealed a possible motive for why Yang drove into the visa office.

San Pedro, Los Angeles — On October 1, 2023, Harbor Division uniformed officers received a radio call regarding a child custody dispute at Gaffey Street and Capitol Drive, in a local store parking lot. Officers and a supervisor met with involved parties and the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Miesha Scott. After a lengthy discussion, officers facilitated the peaceful transfer of custody of the minor child. After the child exchange, Scott entered her vehicle, a white, Chevrolet, “U-Haul” pick-up truck and appeared to drive toward the parking lot exit.

Man Gets Shot by LAPD Cop After Reaching For Gun While Seated inside a Pick-Up Truck

12:57 a.m., Topanga Division uniformed officers received a radio call of a male holding a handgun while seated inside a grey pick-up truck in the parking lot of a shopping center located in the 21000 block of Sherman Way. When officers arrived at scene, they located the truck parked in the lot and positioned their police vehicles behind it. Due to the truck’s tinted windows, it was unclear if the vehicle was occupied. The officers approached the truck on the passenger side and observed the suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Oscar Lopez, seated in the driver seat, and a second individual in the front passenger seat. Both individuals appeared to be intoxicated and did not respond to verbal commands to exit the truck.

After opening the passenger side door, an officer saw a handgun in Lopez’ waistband and ordered him multiple times not to reach for the handgun. Moments later, Lopez lowered his right hand toward his waistband and an OIS occurred. Lopez was struck by gunfire. The Los Angeles City Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced Lopez deceased at scene. The passenger in the truck was removed from the vehicle by officers just prior to the OIS and he was not injured. While at scene, the LAPD’s Family Liaison Section made notifications to Lopez’ next of kin. A loaded Polymer 80, Model 940 C, 9mm black semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene and was booked as evidence. An additional magazine containing four live rounds was also recovered from the scene and was booked as evidence. No officers or other community members were injured during this incident.
