Youngstown, Ohio — On September 14, 2023, a male, later identified as 27-year-old Keishaun Sims entered the Youngstown Police Department lobby in emotional distress. The officer assigned to the auxiliary office, taking on station reports, initially attempted to engage with Sims, however the situation escalated. Sims became confrontational and a physical altercation took place involving both the officer and Sims. The encounter took a crucial turn when Sims assaulted the officer, and attempted to access the officer’s firearm. Other officers arrived and managed to handcuff Sims.

Sims was arrested and booked into Mahoning County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; two counts of assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony; and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and obstructing official business. He remains jailed after his bond was set at $100,000 during his arraignment in municipal court. The officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center to be examined but has since returned to duty. A statement from the police department said they are studying the encounter very closely and are mulling over whether to add more training to officers to learn how to de-escalate similar situations.
There’s definitely better ways of handling the initial than calling a guy “mental”. And going to your handgun wasn’t the best move there.

I suppose departments think it looks good to have LL on hand for everything hoping that bad guys will give up, but I'd hate to die with a bean bag gun in my hands.

That video is a perfect example of exactly what not to do in a case like that.

First step (instead of further agitating the clearly disturbed guy in the lobby who made it patently clear that he wasn't going to leave) should've been to call for at least one other officer prior to initiating physical contact.

''Oh, you want to talk to someone? No problem. I'll have someone come up here immediately! Just a moment, sir.''

Intense Bodycam Footage Shows Louisville Cop Shot in Barrage of Gunfire

Louisville, Kentucky — On Thursday, September 7, 2023 at approximately 2:27 a.m., LMPD 2nd Division Officer Brandon Haley was attempting to catch up with a vehicle that had no lights on. The vehicle was traveling westbound on Kentucky Street and turned south on 40th Street where the vehicle came to rest on the sidewalk. At the beginning of the video captured on Officer Haley's dashcam, shows the taillights being activated as the car attempts to turn left onto 40th Street. Officer Haley exited his vehicle and advised that two subjects were running. As Officer Haley ran towards the vehicle, several subjects began shooting from a house on the west side of 40th Street. Officer Haley was immediately struck and fell to the ground and returned fire.

While still being shot at, Officer Haley ran to the opposite side of the street where he was met by Officer Billotto. As Officer Billotto began assessing Officer Haley's injuries, the subject or subjects began shooting at officers again. Officer Billotto returned fire and dragged Officer Haley to a safer position. Officer Billotto immediately began to relay information to responding officers while rendering aid to Officer Haley. Officer Haley was placed in a police car and transported to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Numerous officers responded, including LMPD's Hostage Negotiation Team, as well as SWAT. Over the course of the next several hours, five persons of interest were taken into custody and multiple guns and narcotics were seized at the scene. At this time, Officer Haley's condition has improved greatly and he is no longer in critical condition.

Suspect Gets Shot After Firing Gun at New York State Trooper

Rochester, New York — On August 6, 2023, shortly before 9:30 p.m. New York State Trooper Dominick Caito ran the plates of a vehicle on Interstate 490 near Innovative Field and found an expired inspection. When Caito tried to stop the vehicle, the driver, 35-year-old Daniel Legler of Chili, took off, heading west onto Route 530 before getting off at Rochester Tech Park, hitting a guide rail, jumping a curb, and driving onto a field. Legler did not comply when Caito told him to stay put. Legler then pulled out a revolver and fired, at which time Caito shot Legler. He died at the scene. Investigators said cocaine was later found in Legler's system.

Man Gets Shot After Firing Gun at Two Deputies Following a Traffic Stop in Fort Collins, Colorado

Fort Collins, Colorado — On July 12, 2022, at approximately 10:32 p.m., Deputy Jeffrey Kaley with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (driving a marked patrol K9 vehicle) observed a silver Ford Escape speeding northbound on Timberline Road at Drake Road at what he estimated to be 90 MPH (in a 40 MPH zone). 23-year-old Bryan Erdbruegger was later identified as the driver and only occupant of the Ford Escape. Deputy Kaley attempted to contact the vehicle as it continued north on Timberline Road and then turned east onto Prospect Road. Deputy Kaley activated his emergency lights and Erdbruegger accelerated. Deputy Kaley aired that he was in pursuit of the vehicle traveling eastbound on Prospect Road at 70 MPH. Shortly after, Erdbruegger pulled over on Prospect Road, east of Specht Point Road. Deputy Kaley initiated a high-risk traffic stop, positioning himself behind his driver's side door, drew his service weapon, and began issuing verbal commands for Erdbruegger to stay in his car and show his hands.

Deputy Aaron Horwitz (in a marked patrol vehicle) responded to the location to provide cover. Bodycam footage shows that Erdbruegger opened his driver's side door, produced a handgun, and began to rapidly fire at Deputy Kaley. In response, Deputy Kaley returned fire. Deputy Horwitz, who arrived on scene just as Erdbruegger started shooting, also returned fire in response to Erdbruegger's shots. Evidence collected at the scene indicates that Erdbruegger was struck by the initial volley from the deputies, but the injuries sustained at this point did not stop his offensive. Erdbruegger reloaded his weapon, fired additional shots, and then advanced towards Deputy Kaley while still holding the gun. Deputy Kaley's firearm was out of ammunition, and he was unable to reload as Erdbruegger advanced. A physical struggle for Erdbruegger's firearm, later determined to be a Glock 43x, ensued between Deputy Kaley and Erdbruegger.

Deputy Kaley was able to push Erdbruegger back as Erdbruegger fired a single shot while still near Deputy Kaley. Erdbruegger initially retreated towards his vehicle and then turned back toward the deputies and began to raise his gun towards the deputies. Deputy Horwitz, having just reloaded his weapon, fired repeatedly, striking Erdbruegger and causing him to fall to the ground. Additional cover units arrived, and deputies rendered medical aid. Erdbruegger was transported to the hospital by ambulance. During transport, Erdbruegger spit at LCSO Deputy Cody Armstrong and continued to protest medical treatment. CIRT investigators recovered 17 casings (brass) fired by Erdbruegger and recovered 40 total casings (silver) fired by the deputies. At the hospital it was determined that Erdbruegger was struck four times (stomach, left thigh, neck, top of head) by shots fired by the deputies. Erdbruegger pleaded guilty to attempted murder, for which 8th Judicial District Court Judge Juan Villaseñor sentenced him to 34 years in prison during an August hearing.
