I’ve had patrol supervisors want me to send my dog into a house looking for an armed suspect before they called SWAT. Nope that ain’t happening. Fortunately our policy gave us the ultimate say so on when to deploy our dogs. The only person who could override us was the SWAT commander.

If there’s enough armed people on scene it doesn’t hurt to have the dog there. Sometimes the deterrent of a dog barking gets a surrender.
Dog call and gun call sums it up nicely...

Española, NM: officers receive a call about a suspicious vehicle. When they approach the vehicle the driver reaches for a rifle. The first officer appears to have a un-chambered pistol (it looks like nothing is ejected when he racks the slide) and turns to run away while the second officer shoots the suspect.

This is the second video in like a week where a duty weapon wasn't chambered. Thank goodness for his backup officer.

Long Beach man drives to Utah to kill brother, set fire to his home before dying in police shootout

A Long Beach man apparently drove 12 hours to Utah to kill his brother and set fire to his home before he died in a shootout with police, authorities said.

The man was identified by the Weber County Attorney’s Office as Jeffrey Roberts, 66. Investigators believe Roberts drove to North Ogden, Utah with the intention of killing his brother, Scott.

Doorbell camera and police body camera footage show the moments leading up to the deadly shooting and the chaotic moments that followed.

On April 27, around 7:10 p.m., Scott Roberts and his wife, Jodi, were eating dinner when Jeffrey arrived at their front door, authorities said.

In the video captured by Scott’s Ring doorbell camera, a brief conversation between the two brothers ends in gunfire when Jeffrey pulls out a handgun and begins shooting. Both Scott and his wife can be heard screaming.

Jeffrey Roberts is seen leaving the home and returning after grabbing a shotgun and other items from his vehicle.

Neighbors heard the gunfire and called 911 and police were dispatched to the scene.

As Jeffrey started to burn down his brother’s home using road flares, police arrived. Although no video of their arrival is seen in the video, police say he immediately opened fire on them, which they returned, fatally striking him.

Roberts was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol with 23 loaded magazines. A 12-gauge shotgun was also recovered at the scene, along with 150 shells in a bag tied to his waist.

Scott Roberts was shot several times and died at the scene, authorities said. Jodi was also shot and remains hospitalized, according to KTLA sister station KTVX.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home and the roof collapsed, aerial footage showed.

The motive for the killing is still under investigation by the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Scott and Jodi’s daughter, Kelsey. In it, she describes Jeffrey Roberts as her father’s estranged brother.

She credited her father with saving her mother’s life.

“My mom is alive because my dad fought my uncle and told my mom to run. Knowing that my dad died a hero is bringing us a small bit of comfort,” she wrote.

She added that the fire has left her mother possessionless, with no personal items or even clothing. Any funds donated will be used to help Jodi Roberts rebuild her life, her daughter writes.

Bodycam: Officer Shot In The Face During Shootout With Gunman. Jacksonville, FL. April 19, 2023.

An officer is in critical condition in the hospital after being shot outside Baptist Medical Center South on Tuesday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The shooter is dead.
The incident began when an off-duty officer noticed a vehicle driving through the hospital parking lot suspiciously on Tuesday night

The officer attempted to stop that car, but the person drove away, Sheriff T.K. Waters said during a media briefing.

Other officers who were near the hospital responded and helped look for the vehicle. One of those responding officers also tried to stop the vehicle, and the man inside the car rolled the window down slightly, held out a gun, or what looked like a gun, and said, “Shoot me,” Waters said.
The man then fired one shot into a police car. The officer in that police car didn’t shoot back at the time, Waters said.
Other officers got involved after the shot was fired and attempted to conduct a PIT maneuver on the vehicle, which failed.
The shooter then crashed into a police car, hit another police car head on, and then crashed into a pole, Waters said.
Officers attempted to get the man out of the car by giving him loud verbal commands repeatedly, but he refused to get out of the car, Waters said.

through the window, striking the officer in the face. That bullet went down toward his chest area, Waters said.
Five officers returned fire, striking the shooter and killing him.
Before this incident, the shooter had only a speeding ticket on his record, according to Waters.
“This shows what police work is. Police officers are not expendable. They’re human beings doing their job to keep people safe,” Waters said. “We don’t come here expecting to be shot or killed, but we’re going to do everything we can to continue to work, continue to keep our city safe and protect our police officers.”

    shot.
This officer was in the same JSO class as Malik Daricaud, who was shot while conducting a follow-up investigation of a traffic stop last month. Daricaud is now recovering from his injuries.
“That is something that I’ve never seen in the 32 years that I’ve been working here,” Waters said. “It’s getting very ridiculous, very dangerous, and it’s concerning.”
The Jacksonville Fraternal Order of Police posted a message on Facebook, asking for prayers for the officer:

All officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, according to Waters. That is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.
The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation.

Another video that illustrates @HCM ‘s reminders to expect nothing.

Hyde Park, N.Y. — On Friday, April 29, 2022, around 3:30 p.m., New York State Police and the Hyde Park Police responded to a physical domestic at a residence on North Cross Road. Police said Hyde Park officers Johsua Kemlage and Bryan Sweeney with Trooper Christopher Miller of SP Rhinebeck were initially successful in deescalating a dispute between, 34-year-old Jamie Feith and her partner at the home. As the officers interviewed Feith, she armed herself with a knife and attempted to stab the officers. An officer deployed a Taser before Hyde Park Officer Kemlage fires two shots, knocking Feith to the floor. The partner, being held back just feet away, yells, "Don't (expletive) shoot her" twice as Kemlage fires a third shot and then a fourth. "No, No, No. No. What the (expletive)," the partner yells as Sweeney straddles Feith to pull the knife from her. "Get off of her. Get off of her." The video ends just after he yells at Kemlage not to kill him as well. Feith was pronounced dead at the scene. The New York State Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene and is now the lead investigative agency.

Eta: also, it all happens on a balcony/ near stairs.

Oxnard, California — On Friday, April 28, 2023, at approximately 12:15 a.m. Oxnard police officers responded to 235 East Seventh Street to assist the Oxnard Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel with an uncooperative subject requiring medical attention. It was initially reported that the subject had been drinking and was hallucinating. Fire Department personnel requested assistance because the subject was in possession of a knife and was actively cutting his wrists. The subject of the call has been identified as 24 year-old Oxnard resident Michael Owens. Due to the reported circumstances, officers responded “Code 3” to the location. A “Code 3” response is when officers drive with their vehicle’s emergency lights and sirens activated. Officer Manuel Garcia was the first officer to arrive at the scene. Officer Garcia is a 5-year veteran of the Oxnard Police Department and is currently assigned to our Patrol Division. He has not previously been involved in a shooting.

Officer Garcia parked in the alley and approached from the north side of the apartment building. He contacted fire personnel and they told him Owens had barricaded himself in a room that was later determined to be a single communal bathroom. Officer Garcia proceeded up the apartment building’s south stairway, and took a position at the top of the staircase. This position was approximately 45 feet south of the communal bathroom Owens had gone into. Officer Garcia made efforts to communicate with Owens and gain his cooperation. Owens emerged from the bathroom, retreated back inside, and then re-emerged with a knife in his hand. Owens then began walking directly toward Officer Garcia. Officer Garcia gave commands to Owens, and Owens did not comply. As Owens continued to move towards the officer, Officer Garcia fired his handgun. Emergency Medical Services personnel, who were still on scene, engaged in life saving efforts after the shooting. An ambulance transported Owens to the Ventura County Medical Center for treatment. He remained in critical condition until the afternoon of Saturday, April 29, when medical authorities declared him deceased at approximately 2:30 p.m.
