I need to grab the original LAPD video that's being discussed vs trying to have an opinion based on that chopped version. The copper with the Beretta 92F is not a youngster. She's a FTO (P3), and that looks like four service stripes on her forearm ... so, 20+ years.

edited to add: SoCalDep can correct me, but IIRC some deputys at SEB (their full-time tactical element) were actively using 92Fs long after the issue pistol changed.

@SoCalDep - I'm saving that post. Excellent thoughts on what trainers should be doing. Thank you.

Immediately preceding the shooting incident, three Oxnard Police Department officers were conducting a DUI investigation. Adam Barcenas quickly approached from the west. Barcenas was not involved with the DUI investigation. Barcenas was yelling at the officers, repeatedly stating that he hated them. Barcenas was wielding a steel bar, approximately five feet in length, with both hands. Barcenas continued to yell at the officers as he advanced towards them. Officers Santos and Parker drew their tasers, and Officer Schwartz drew his service firearm. Barcenas ignored the officers’ commands and continued to advance towards the officers in an aggressive and threatening manner.

Barcenas advanced on Officer Schwartz, and Officer Schwartz fired four shots from his firearm. Three of the four bullets struck Barcenas. Barcenas was shot in the inner thigh of his right leg, his left hip and his left upper torso. Simultaneously, Officer Santos fired her taser. The taser probes struck Barcenas, but embedded in Barcenas’ clothing and did not penetrate his skin. Officer Parker did not fire his taser.

ETA: It seems the deceased had some previous interaction with the justice system:

" In April of 2019, Barcenas carried out separate random, violent, and unprovoked attacks on two elderly strangers on Sixth Street near "A" Street in downtown Oxnard.
In the first attack, he approached a 71-year-old woman, punched her in the head, and pushed her to the ground and then kicked her several times before walking away.

A short time later, Barcenas approached an 80-year-old man who was walking with his wife in the same area and he punched the man in the face, walked away, came back, and punched the man in the face a second time.

The woman died eight days later but prosecutors did not file a homicide charge because they felt they could not conclusively prove that her death was tied to the beating because of significant preexisting health problems.

So Barcenas pleaded no contest to two counts of felony elder abuse and spent half of a six year prison sentence before being paroled last year."

Badguy had an RDS on his pistol. Not the first I’ve seen in a video, but still not super common.

On Sunday, March 19, 2023, at about 6:50 p.m., Senior Corporal Matthew McLain was notified by property management at 1910 Bennett Avenue that a man they believed was involved in a stolen vehicle case earlier in the month where the suspect rammed a marked squad car was at the location. The preliminary investigation determined Senior Corporal McLain arrived at the apartments and requested back up. When officers arrived, Senior Corporal McLain and Officer Kimberley Esquivel entered the front of the building and walked through to the back parking lot where they located the suspect, 35-year-old Hernan Gutierrez. Senior Corporal McLain started engaging with Gutierrez, giving commands, and the suspect pulled away and started to struggle with officers.

During the fight, Officer McLain drew and deployed his taser, which was ineffective in controlling the suspect. As the struggle continued, Gutierrez produced a handgun and fired one round. Officer Esquivel drew her department-issued firearm and shot one time, hitting Gutierrez. The suspect fell on top of his weapon, and officers placed him in handcuffs. Officers immediately requested Dallas Fire Rescue to the scene and rendered medical aid while monitoring Gutierrez’s condition. DFR responded and took Gutierrez to a local hospital in critical condition. The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene. The round fired by Gutierrez was located by detectives and hit an occupied apartment north of the incident location. No officers or anyone at the scene was injured. Gutierrez will be charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. The suspect is also currently wanted on a federal probation violation for a firearm-related offense. The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit.

Yes, LAPD classifies unintentional discharges into tactical and non-tactical categories. I don't know more about the rationale or effect of that, but if it is an attempt to make some distinction between UIs due to things like involuntary muscle contractions as opposed to carelessness and recklessness, then that makes some sense, despite the common internet cliche concerning "booger hooks" and "bang switches."

Washington, D.C. — On Saturday, March 18, 2023, at approximately 8:50 a.m., a United States Park Police (USPP) sergeant and officer responded to a request for assistance by Metropolitan Police Department officers on scene at 34th Street and Baker Street NE for a vehicle reported as stolen. While officers were attempting to detain the driver, the car fled from the scene with one USPP officer inside the car. A second officer, the USPP sergeant, was dragged by the fleeing car from outside the vehicle. The USPP officer inside the car gave verbal commands for the driver to stop. After the driver did not comply, the USPP officer discharged their firearm. The driver identified as 17-year-old Dalaneo Martin was pronounced dead on scene. Bodycam Footage Of Deputy Shooting Man Outside Macy’s in Santa Clarita, California

Santa Clarita, California — On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at approximately 10:58 PM, Santa Clarita Station deputies responded to a shopping center located in the 24200 block of Valencia Boulevard, in Santa Clarita, regarding a call of a male who was trespassing. Additional information indicated the male was sleeping in front of the business and refused to leave. The male was later identified as 50-year-old Christopher Lee Mercurio. Upon arrival, a deputy contacted Mercurio in front of the business and asked him to leave the area. Mercurio refused and threatened to kill her. Mercurio advanced toward the deputy and punched her in the face and head. The deputy used self-defense techniques and created distance between her and Mercurio; however, he continued to advance toward her, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Mercurio was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground.

Assisting deputies arrived and immediately rendered medical aid to Mercurio. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responded and transported Mercurio to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The deputy was also transported to a local hospital, where she was treated for injuries sustained during the assault. She was later released. No other persons were injured during this incident. This incident was deemed a qualifying event under Assembly Bill 1506 guidelines. Members of the California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, were notified of the incident and investigators responded to the scene. Members of DOJ were briefed by LASD homicide investigators and assumed control of the crime scene and investigation. The employee involved in the deputy-involved shooting has been identified as Deputy Lorena Gonzalez.

Arming another with back up gun

Interesting to be caught on video and the circumstances around it. Uniformed officer engaged in gunfight and after multiple magazines has bystander off duty and unarmed officer arrive to assist. Arms off duty with his ankle back up gun before other assistance arrives. Nice to see the support and it to work out.
