2 Deputies Get Shot in The Head by Suspect While Responding To Neighborhood Dispute

Peaceful Valley, Washington — On Thursday, Feb 10, around 4:20 pm, deputies Ryan Rathbun and Jason Thompson responded to multiple 911 calls about two neighbors shooting at each other from different houses in the 3000 block of Green Valley Drive near Kendall. They arrived and from across the street attempted to talk to 60-year-old Joel Berck Young, who fired birdshot toward his neighbor. Young, who according to reports appeared intoxicated, waved his 12-gauge shotgun before firing at both deputies’ heads. Body cam footage shows the pair of deputies asking the suspect to come out of his home. After a verbal back and forth, Thompson is shot in the head first and goes down. Rathbun is then also shot in the head while checking on Thompson. Rathbun returns fire at the suspect.

Both remained conscious and were able to provide cover for a neighbor who stepped in and fired at Young to protect the deputies, while residents pulled the deputies into a neighbor’s garage and performed first aid. Young peacefully surrendered around 6 p.m. after the WCSO SWAT team surrounded his house. Young remains in Whatcom County Jail. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, six counts of reckless endangerment, assault while armed with a firearm and felony harassment. Since, Rathbun and Thompson have undergone numerous medical procedures and treatments. Both recovered and returned to service a year later. On March 4, 2023, the two deputies, filed a suit against Joel Young for assault and battery of officer(s) Thompson and Rathbun in the line of duty. On May 5, 2023, they were awarded the Medal of Honor by the Washington State Attorney General's Office during the Law Enforcement Medal Of Honor/Peace Officier Memorial Ceremony in Olympia.

Carroll, Iowa — On March 5, 2021, Carroll Police Officer Patrick McCarty saw 29-year-old Dennis Guider Jr. in the passenger seat of a car at a restaurant drive-through. Around 1:00 p.m. Officer McCarty stopped the vehicle and indicated Guider was facing arrest for a forgery case in Illinois. Officer McCarty asked Guider to step out of the vehicle. A minute later, Guider opened the driver door of the car and pushed out a woman who had been driving the vehicle. Guider refused to comply with officers’ commands to exit a vehicle and attempted to flee in the car. As he fled, the officer ended up on the hood of the suspect’s car.

Authorities say Guider reached speeds up to 60 mph with the officer still on the hood before striking a culvert and throwing the officer from the vehicle, resulting in serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Officer McCarty suffered a broken vertebrae in his back. The officer was treated at St. Anthony Regional Hospital and released that day. Guider was later located in Chicago Heights, Illinois after ditching his original vehicle and stealing another vehicle from a garage with the keys left inside. District Associate Judge Joseph McCarville sentenced Guider to up to five years of prison to be served separately from the Illinois incarceration. Guider was wanted in Illinois for violating his parole for burglary and fraud. He had been sentenced to up to six years in prison and was paroled in July 2019, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Bronx, NY — On Sunday, February 5, 2023, Police Officer Accordino, Police Officer Arias, Police Officer Brown, and Police Officer Keys were assigned to a detail in the vicinity of 730 Concourse Village West, Bronx. At approximately 2:15 p.m., a civilian victim was walking on the west sidewalk of Concourse Vilage West, approaching 153rd Street, when 49-year-old Kwame Garnett approached her from behind and kicked her, causing her pain. Garneft continued to walk on Concourse Village West, and approached another civilian victim and shoved her. The first civilian victim then approached Police Officers, on foot, reported that she was assaulted, and informed them that the subject was walking south on Concourse Vilage West, toward 153rd Street.

The five officers began to walk south on Concourse Village West in search of Garnett. At this point, Garnett reached the intersection of Grand Concourse and East 153rd Street, where he removed a firearm from his person and pointed it at a third civilian victim. As Garnett pointed the firearm at the civilian victim, the five officers caught up to him and began to shout verbal commands for him to drop the weapon. Garnett instead turned his attention away from the civilian victim and began to walk away, still in possession of the firearm in his left hand. As he walked away, Garnett pointed the firearm at his own head before again lowering it and continuing to walk.

Shortly thereafter, Garnett stopped walking, and in a rapid motion, turned towards the officers while brandishing the firearm and pointed it in their direction. In response, Police Officer Accordino discharged two rounds from his service firearm, Police Officer Arias discharged 16 rounds from his service firearm, Police Officer Brown discharged 16 rounds from his service firearm, and Police Officer Keys discharged five rounds from his service firearm. Garnett was struck by the gunfire and fell to the ground. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to Lincoln Hospital Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. Subsequent to this incident, Garnett was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Menacing 2nd, Menacing of a Police Officer, Assault 3rd, and related charges.

What the heck has gone wrong such that pointing a pistol at a civilian's head gets basically no reaction?

A lot of people on the video are complaining about the cars as backstop, but I think there are a lot of bad backstops in a city so dense.

Bodycam Video of Assault and Abduction of Officer That Led to Officers Fatally Shooting The Suspect

Fairfax County, Virginia — On May 11, 2023, at 4:06 p.m., 38-year-old Brandon Lemagne passed a license plate reader which alerted officers to a stolen U-Haul in the area. An officer saw the U-Haul in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway, in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County. Lemagne pulled the U-Haul into the gas station parking lot, exited the vehicle then walked away. The officer can be seen on surveillance footage speaking with Lemagne then the two walk towards the officer’s cruiser. The officer told Lemagne he was going to be detained for driving the stolen U-Haul. Lemagne then attacked the officer. He immediately grabbed the officer’s firearm and tried to remove it from the holster.

Lemagne held onto the officer’s holstered firearm, assaulted the officer by striking him in the head and pulled him across the parking lot in an attempt to disarm him. Lemagne then opened the officer’s cruiser door and forced the officer into the vehicle. During the assault, the vehicle was placed into gear and rapidly accelerated backwards with the officer trapped underneath Lemagne. The officer radioed for emergency assistance and told dispatch the suspect had his firearm. As the cruiser drove in reverse, two community members’ vehicles were struck. The cruiser then struck a business and came to a stop. Lemagne continued his assault on the officer as two officers arrived on scene. One officer discharged his firearm as Lemagne remained on top of the officer inside the cruiser. A second officer arrived on scene and attempted to remove Lemagne off the officer.

He was able to pull Lemagne off the officer and out of the cruiser. The officer then discharged his firearm. Lemagne was struck in the upper body. He was declared deceased at the scene. The victim officer was taken to a nearby hospital and was treated for his injuries. He was later released. The officer’s duty belt remained on the officer during the assault with the firearm holstered. The holstered firearm was pulled from his hip to the front of the officer’s waistband. The U-Haul was confirmed to be stolen from Richmond on May 3. The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Master Police Officer Kenyatta Momon, a 24-year veteran, and Police Officer First Class Christopher Grubb, an 8-year veteran of the department discharged their firearms. Both officers are assigned to the Mount Vernon District Station. Both officers are on restricted duty status until the investigation is complete.

Sometimes the suspect’s body has to be your back stop.
Just a dog chauffeur that used to hold the dumb end of the leash.
