    Kevin Casey Custom Knives

My friend Kevin Casey makes custom Damascus knives: https://www.kevincaseycustomknives.com/. The process is both fascinating and great fun to watch. Think big old hunks of white hot steel, 50-ton presses, and the infernal banging of a power hammer.

While Kevin generally makes big "art" knives, I recently convinced him to make some utility knives.

Small knife is a Terzuola design, built by WE knives. The model is a CTF. And you can get it through Massdrop

The larger knife is an ATCF built by Bob Terzuola in 1994. He was 50 that year and every knife he built that year has a gold plug with an embossed “50”, set into the blade

I picked up a Clinch Pick on P-F a little while back, and began to understand the lack of enthusiasm for the factory edge.

I took an initial shot with my hand tools, but the angle of the edge makes it tough to get to so I ended up using a ceramicc rod sharpener. Meh, better but not happy.

Recently I took advantage of the Amazon deal on the Ken Onion Work Sharp and have worked on about 100 knives, mostly kitchen knives but almost everything else as well. Mostly 25 degree angle for working knives, 20 degree for kitchen knives. I had put a 20 degree edge on the Clinch Pick and was much more satisfied.

A few minutes ago I was sharpening some Cold Steel shovels, which came out great, and decided to drop the CP down to a 17.5 degree edge. I’m at the skill level now where I can hold a very consistent angle and use light pressure with rapid results in just a could of strokes either side. I ran Extra Coase, Coarse, Medium and Fine grits, as recommended.

Sweet! It’s hard to see in the pics but the edge is super consistent.

A little later I took a light pokey shop knife down to a 15 degree edge - not very durable I suspect but scary sharp!
