My local range made me a happy camper last night: They got in the classic "thug" targets.

I like that target because it is nearly impossible to see where the rounds are hitting. I ran about 48 rounds through the Security-Six, trying to speed up a little while doing a failure drill, all DA at ten yards with a mixture of ammunition. Only two weren't good hits-- one in the shoulder and one in the hip.

Part of what I shot was some of the carry rounds (Winchester Ranger +P) to keep things fresh. The Perfecta .38s that Wally-Woild formerly sold felt the same as the +P rounds. Federal RNL felt softer, Precision Delta HBWCs softer still. The P-D and Federals were pretty smoky.

The trigger felt fine. I imagine that the gun had been fired enough (or dryfired) to smooth things out.

I found Kuhnhausen's manual indispensable when working on my SS trigger. Like a S&W the double action pull has two pickup surfaces, a hammer dog and a secondary hook on the trigger. The key is to time it where the secondary hook engages before the dog hits the shelf of the hammer single action sear and that the trigger does not hit the hammer. To cure a dog that is not timed correctly you can make one 0.020 longer out of 1/8 steel and adjust the let out. For the trigger hits hammer scenario like on a GP100 or a S&W material is removed underneath the SA surface of the hammer to clearance. My gun had both but once addressed the pull is superb.

So I ordered a DAO S&W 64 this morning. I paid the extra $10 for them to hand select one for me, hoping the staff at Southern Ohio Gun know more about revolvers than I do. Being that I all I know about revolvers is that the cylinder rotates, I figured it couldn't hurt. After the credit card fee, the hand select fee, the "adult signature required" shipping fee, and what my FFL charges me for a transfer, I'll be taking this gun home for ~$265. That still sounds like a good deal to me.
