    Study released on proactive policing

    https://www.npr.org/2017/11/09/56287...ost-less-clear
    --------------------
.....The findings are summarized in a handy table on Page 127. Some of the highlights:

"Hot spot" policing — targeted patrols of specific trouble spots — is backed by strong evidence. This may be of interest in Baltimore, which ended the old practice of "clearing corners" under pressure from the Justice Department.

"Stop and frisk" is more ambiguous. There's strong evidence that it works when practiced in violent-crime hot spots, but the evidence is weaker for its effectiveness when practiced throughout an entire jurisdiction.

"Broken windows," the notion that addressing small problems can avert more serious crimes, has strong evidence when the tactic focuses on improving a neighborhood, such as cleaning up vacant lots. But when the tactic means widespread arrests of people for certain "quality of life" infractions, the evidence is weaker.

My comment is not one that I thought of. Instead I'm quoting a recently retired l.e. friend. He said that a beat cop who takes too much initiative will get many more ass chewings than one who takes very little initiative. He explained that his patrol sgts and lt's got real pissy when said cop was being complained about for going out of his way to be proactive(his term). Like I said, I'm just repeating what the old dude told me.

Yep. Prior to “C.O.P.S.” Programs, there was a huge expectation that you keep YOUR best clean. Which meant that others should not have to come and clean up crap in your area. You used every resource available. Targeted patrol, community involvement, code enforcement and other groups (INS, Welfare Fraud, Probation, Parole, etc.) to help, and you selected your major criminal profesisonals for intense enforcement. That was being a good cop. All of that is now dead. Folks like Freddie Gray and Michael Brown would have been those you would have worked hard to keep incarcerated so your local business and residents (of all colors , cultures and races) would not need to call the police as victims. Stay in your car is the new reality. You get the policing your community deserves.
Just a Hairy Special Snowflake supply clerk with no field experience, shooting an Asymetric carbine as a Try Hard. Snarky and easily butt hurt. Favorite animal is the Cape Buffalo....likely indicative of a personality disorder.

    Hot spots...

We do that. The physical embodiment of this program is total none sense and not what you'd imagine.

Clearing corners works well, but now we aren't even allowed to do that.

Or even, you get the policing that the media demands

Yes, but for a lot of people, it doesn't exist or isn't real until they hear it on NPR.

If you had full run, what would you prefer as best option(s)? (not a criticism, a question, as I don't even know what "check your corners is" in this context, but now I have the sergeant from Aliens barking in my head).

Assume a diverse area both economically and culturally (watch out for the soccer moms!).

Mod, if this is a poor post apologies and I will remove (although I will threaten to rage quit in the new coterie room).
