There's a metric shit ton more human interactions to go by.

I've de-escalated hundreds of bear interactions. So did Timothy Treadwell.

Treadwell is probably the only person I would consider a SME on de-escalation with bears, and he got eaten. So there's that.

He did do amazing work prior to being ate. Lots of good lessons.

Damn that post is epic in Biblical proportions. I've heard of the fellow.

A article on Tim Treadwell’s and Amie Huguenard’s death.

    http://www.yellowstone-bearman.com/Tim_Treadwell.html

Says that 3 rangers killed the 1000 pound bear that killed both Treadwell and Huguenard.
They first saw it at 20 ft away.
One guy shot it 11 times with a .40 S&W while the other two shot it with 12 gauges 5 times each.
    It expired 12 feet away.

The article didn't say the load each shot, but that's a lot of lead in a short period of time.

Wondering if those who know more about bear behavior than me believe this to be predatory behavior—as opposed to? What’s with the brief tree climbs? Assuming the man was backing up for the sake of backing up and creating distance, as opposed to purposeful movement to safety/structure, would it have been better to stop, get large and loud? No crystal balls around, I realize, but what’s your take?

I remember when this happened. The problem was the AK Trooper in front had just a G22, and the two troopers behind him had the shotguns.
