OC Spray (Mace?) was apparently used unsuccessfully ...

The path of least resistance will seldom get you where you need to be.

Dudes got some balls right there...

I doubt if he could have got off a shot in the time it took her to lunge. She didn’t seem overly aggressive, but then again I’m sitting in a chair with a glass of scotch in my hand...

The guide has a really good description of the event on his youtube channel (you have to go to youtube and click "show more" to see it). Pretty interesting read.

Without knowing more about that exact location, and history with that bear, it is hard to say much beyond it ended well. The outfit was Jacques Alaska, and I hunted sheep, moose and grizzly with them in the early 90’s before moving to Alaska. The bear appeared more curious than aggressive.

Thanks. Would you have fired a warning shot?

Tough call, but probably not here.

First, the bear seemed more curious than aggressive, and seemed to be responding as you would want in this situation. Second, the guide had (only) a six shot revolver, which is something I like about a USP FS, you have enough capacity to invest a round with a warning shot. Third, warning shots have the effect of scaring off a bear, or sometimes provoking a charge. Since the bear wasn’t actively charging, I might be reluctant to introduce something that could change the bear’s behavior.

My only nit, based on what I watched, was when the guide aggressively charged the bear. My worry would be if he fell, bad things could have happened. I am sure the photographer was hoping for a good outcome!

Copy that. Thanks. I'm still trying to figure out how close you let a "curious" bear get to you or others?

If weather conditions allowed, I would be tempted to use bear spray.
