I was thinking the same from his description of the bear's behavior.

Yes. I’d much rather take a gun to a bearfight than a knife. But, this story underscores the importance of edged weapons in our toolkit. Reachable by either hand, while under duress.

I can’t imagine venturing in the wilds without my light and knife, but if I am down to fighting off a grizzly with my Spyderco, I have seriously screwed up.

Bear spray worked, sort of....

Smith was hiking alone in steep, moderately heavy timber when the attack occurred. He was unaware of the bear until it made contact with him. During the encounter, the bear bit Smith’s bear spray holstered on his hip, rupturing the canister and presumably causing the bear to break off the attack.
