Something sort of like this?
The M40 is my favorite sniper rifle. Back in the 90s, put together my own M40 "clone". A Remington 40x Varminter in 7.62x51 topped with a Leupold 10x. I wish I'd gotten a variable, but the 10x is reportedly what the Marine Corps was using at the time, so I went with that instead. The 40x is heavy, but I love shooting it.
LL, I don't know if my "M40" is good enough pron for your thread, but here she is.
Here's a photo of Chuck Mawhinney with his M40 in Vietnam
I tried to find a a photo of Carlos Hathcock with his M40, but my Search-Fu is weak

I liked the M40, and was in the Marine Corps during the 90s. Yes, it was a fixed 10x scope.
Still, for serious long range work, I can’t get excited about a .308 Win rifle. That the snipers of the day were so successful is a testament to their abilities and field craft skills.
If ever I get around to building a bolt action 6.5 CM, I’ll likely base it on the M40A1 set up. Until then, this little varmint gun will have to suffice.
You can get much more of what you want with a kind word and a gun, than with a kind word alone.
I have been giving serious thought to the 6.5 Creedmore. I've been thinking about an AR in 260 Remington since the cartridge was introduced
