I’m on board with 50% of the Trump agenda. Bring on the constitutionalist judges, boarder security, corporate tax cuts, and certain aspects of his defense posture and deregulation.

What I’m skeptical of is basically his entire fiscal policy (ie the $4 TRILLION budget he is about to sign) and some of his trade protectionism.

What I can’t stand is the Mickey Mouse bullshit such as the Tweeting, nepotism, and managerial incompetence that has usurped his ability to lead and sapped his political capital.

Yes, Trump is not Hillary and I’m more than happy not to hear that bitch cackle for 4 years. But keep in mind that 8 years of GW Bush’s policies gave us 8 years of Obama. I shudder to think what the price for Trump will be for the next decade.

Statistically that's usually how it goes. The incumbent gets re-elected and then the other party takes over for 8 years. Back-and-forth, back-and-forth. I think it's something like 85% of the time you can predict who will win the election on that alone.

If Trump does get re-elected the Dems will have to pick a real piece of work in order to lose in 2020. Think Hilary Clinton's mind in Bernie Sanders' body with Michael Jackson's craziness. I'm not putting it past them though.

The big thing is who the Dems run in 2020.

-If they run Hillary again, she'll lose again. I doubt that she'll survive another primary season anyway.

-If they run some party hack like Liz Warren, likewise.

I'm more worried who they run in 2024

The legacy of a POTUS on the political landscape is not realized until a decade or more after they left office.

A number of W's policies including his NAFTA-esque handling of trade, softball approach to China's currency manipulation, push for TARP, and protracted GWOT all left a lot of blue collar independents wondering WTF the GOP had done from them lately. Each one of those issues could be explained on some level but collectively they were too much for many blue collar voters who broke for Obama in 2008. A good number of those same voters were disillusioned by the empty suit of Hope and Change and voted for Trump last year due to his populist / protectionist / nationalist message.

Thus, despite W's speech last week where he not so subtly criticized Tump's nationalism as thinly veiled nativism, Bush really needs to look in the mirror if he wants to understand why we are where we are today.

What I getting at is that we all feel great about soaring markets and the notable absence of the Lizard Queen as our POTUS today, but the real effects of Trump will be measured in 2025 and beyond.

And therein lies the great hope for the GOP - only a couple of Dems in public office are qualified to walk and chew gum at the same time. Not to mention the fact that the major debate in the Democratic Party is whether they should limit their platform to socialism, or go all out and embrace communism (actually, fascism more closely resembles the far left but who really cares what they call it at that point).

I suppose the real threat is if one of those liberal, billionaire CEO-types from companies like Amazon, Target, or Apple throws their hat in the ring as an independent.

The effects of the Clinton's efforts to make Hillary! the only choice are going to be with the Democratic Party for a while.

The State of Trump is definitely the most entertaining reality show yet. His tweetfest doesn't phase me anymore. I think this farce of a government is hilarious with the side benefit of exposing those in need of a good old fashioned hangin'.

ETA: just caught a teaser "Jimmy Carter open to working with Trump" .. ah, that should be good.

As usual in Washington, the deficit hawks have all gone silent now that they're in control and can channel money to their friends and pet projects. I can't say I'm disappointed because it was what I was expecting.

The "middle-class tax cut" as currently proposed is a bad joke.
