1911 picture thread

This is my first 1911 without checkering, I’ve had 30, 25, and 20 lpi guns. This treatment is hard to compare to any but it definitely checks the aggressive but not overly so box. It has more “stay put” than 30 and 25 lpi for sure.

Similar to my experience with the snake skin. Better at keeping the gun in place than 25 but doesn’t hurt like 20.

I’ll have to keep the advice about customs pricing in mind. While I like the aesthetic features of, for example, Rogers builds, I also love a simple 1911 with only performance relevant work. And I agree that a well used blued gun is its own good look.

I hadn’t thought about foregoing nonessential mods potentially being the difference between affording and not affording a custom (duh…), or about bluing and parkerizing making for easier work down the road. That all makes sense. Also, can’t bluing be redone basically an unlimited number of times, while modern finishes have a limit on how many times you can reapply them? I think I remember reading that about Wilson’s Armor Tuff.

Yes, you can re-blue an infinite number of times, as long as no polishing is done.

The biggest difference is you will need some patience, know exactly what you want, be able to source a solid base gun, and find a reputable builder who’s accepting work.

Is that it!!? Two of those are easy, one I can pull off, but one seems almost impossible. As soon as I find an old lightweight commander, I’ll be looking for a smith.

@NPV meant to say "find an affordable, solid base gun". I paid up on a base gun going to Milks, but it was near perfect, and the correct year, the frontstrap and slide are straight, the roolmarks are deep enough, the tirggerguard is thick enough, yada, yada, etc.

I seemed to have emphasized the wrong part of my previous post.

To clarify, I know pretty much what I want and am pretty good with patience and discipline. You do have to shop around, but deals on old guns are out there and I’m not opposed to building from a new gun either. But finding a smith who knows the old ways and builds in the styles I like, and have open books that I can afford…well, they seem to be less numerous every week. Shoot, it’s hard to find a quality bluer these days.

I took advantage of some warm weather today and took out my old Springfield Loaded 1911-A1.

I purchased this gun in January of 2001 and carried when I spent some time as a transport deputy. It was my first non mil spec 1911, and one of the last guns I would ever sell. It was also the most expensive gun I had ever purchased at that point, around $600.
