Thanks All!
I'm not without dogs however, here is Jack's mat, Luna.
She's eight, and just a great lab too.
A bit confused as to where he's gone off to, but still a great dog!
A question for those who have put a dog down:
How long did you wait before looking for another? I have a need for another dog. The home feels empty with just one!

My sister is a veterinary technician so we tend to just let her know that we're willing take the next rescue that comes in to the clinic and looks like it'll do okay with kids. See also, cats. My pet store owning grandparents used to do similar but their local P.D. or the neighboring one would hear that they were in need of a dog and bring by a poor abandoned thing for them to look after until a permanent home could be found. And the interim housing always turned into an outright adoption within a day. So I guess I just keep the family tradition rolling. Failing that, I'd just keep my eyes open until running into a pup that catches your attention.
Actually, game wardens tended to drop injured wild birds with my very well stocked savant grandmother to nurse until ready for relocation or transport to an open clinic in the morning. Walking into the kitchen to find a turkey/jay/whatever flapping around or a bird of prey in a generous cage being told and accepting that it will be taking its medicine was pretty common. Probably explains my sister's chosen vocation
