Those guys were/are heroes. The USMC certainly smashed the myth of Japanese invincibility in the PTO.

With the Old Breed by Sledge knocks you down. Highly recommended reading. It is in stark contrast to Band of Brothers.

LL, I completely agree. My wife got me With the Old Breed for Christmas which I finished within just a couple days because I couldn't put it down. Eugene Sledge was an incredibly thoughtful and articulate person and he provides you with what very much feels like an unbiased, objective (and reflective) look at what he and others went through in some of the major battles and turning points of the Pacific theater. A huge hats off and thanks to all those guys for their sacrifice, determination and resolve.

With the Old Breed is a great book. A Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie and Islands of the Damned by RV Burgin are great companion books.
I really need to watch The Pacific. I've read the book.
