S&W 66-2, VZ Grips, Lobo Gun Leather

Y'all are a bad influence! Way back in the day, I worked for the Sheriff's Office. All the important guys had S&W 66 revolvers with a 2 1/2" barrel. I wasn't important, so no 66 for me. Thirty odd years later, I have my 66-2 via Gun Broker. The model 66-2 was manufactured 1982 - 1985. Mine came with the original box and paperwork.

It appears that my "new" revolver was originally sold in 1985.

I'm no revolver expert but, my guess is that the original owner may have put "a box of shells" through it before stuffing it back in the box.

I installed a Wilson spring kit and some VZ grips.

The gun ran flawlessly through the first 250 rounds of .38 Special ammo. Only a minor windage adjustment was needed. The VZ grips fit the gun well but, my hand didn't like the finger grooves. My knifemaker buddy Kevin Casey used his belt grinders to remove them. I now get a much better grip on the gun and it's more comfortable to shoot.

The holster is an "Enhanced Avenger" from Lobo Gun Leather. The quality is quite good but, the gun sits a tad high in the holster. I'm using the old "plastic bag trick" to see if I can get it to seat a bit deeper.

I'm not quite sure what this gun is for. I do know that's it's seriously retro cool and makes me smile. Maybe that's enough. From the Big Empty, ELN.

It takes you back, and that's enough.

Is that a new holster, or made by the first owner of the company?

I'm on my phone so unfortunately no link, but we had a small discussion in the holster forum earlier about the current quality of Lobo holsters. Would be great to have your input there.

Very nice. I'm partial to the K Frame snubbies. The first handgun I purchased was a Model 19 with 2 1/2" barrel. That was probably 1991. Mine came in the same box and brown paper as yours. Wish I'd never sold it.

My local gun store has a nice Model 66-5 (last version before the internal lock, I think). Like you, I can't figure out what I'd do with it, but I might buy it anyway. They're very hard to find here in California.
