    Oil lube for small auto

What is a good non grease to lube a semi auto pistol? I picked up some Tetra Gun Lubricant, but I want the best lube for a new pistol.

There's nothing wrong with lubing a pistol with a light viscosity grease. I like Slide-Glide a lot, but have resigned myself to using Lubriplate 105 on all of my semi-auto pistols. Grease stays put and doesn't burn off or evaporate like some liquid lubricants.

That said, Slip 2000 EWL would be my go to if looking for a vetted lubricant.

    Tetra gun lube works, too.

There is no “best” lube. Tetra will work as well as anything else out there. I use G96 CLP because I have a bunch and no one has proven to me that there is something better.

For carry/defense guns that will remain loaded, I like a non-penetrating lube that won't affect ammo. I've settle on Frog Lube paste (and liquid) for my Glocks.

For guns where maximizing friction, wear, and corrosion reduction is more important, I like WeaponShield and Lucas oil.

I'm using WeaponShield right now, and I've been very pleased with it.

Handguns aren't really a demanding application for lubricants, which is why there are many options that work about equally well.

My preference for carry guns is to use something that's viscous enough to stay where I put it, so it doesn't migrate downwards over time.

For range guns, I don't really care, as long as they have lube.

The only other exception is for prolonged exposure to really cold temperatures, as some of the heavier lubes may thicken enough to impede function, but that's not something that applies to most people.

    Oil lube for small auto

Like others have said, opinions vary a lot.

As a noob, I tried the paraffin based Frog Lube. It worked well when warm, but seemed to migrate into awkward areas after the gun cooled.

I then tried FireClean. This also worked. The only problem I had is that since it was vegetable oil sourced, it gummed up over time. I experienced this on a S&W M&P that I had stored for a number of months. It was pretty expensive, too.

On the recommendations of folks here, I bought a bottle of Slip 2000 EWL a year or so ago. It seems to work, is not too expensive and, in a 2 oz. Gaunt Industries needle bottle, I can put it right where the manuals say to apply it.

They make a 30w version of it, which I might try. I think the theory is for a carry gun, a 30W will tend to stay put longer.

Anyway, like I said, after watching these threads for a while, it sure seems like ANYTHING will work, you just have to use it.

ETA I haven't posted this in a while, but I compiled this lube list by price per oz a while back. It was pretty interesting to me at least how much price varies in this market:

Slide Glide Lite, tube, 0.25 oz. $26.00 / oz

    Fireclean 2 oz. $9.97 / oz

Slipstream Weapon Lubricant 2 oz. (est) $7.50 / oz.

    Militec-1 4oz Lubricant $5.73 / oz

M-Pro Gun oil LPX 2 oz. bottle $4.99 / oz

    Inox MX3 100 g (3.5 oz) small $4.28 / oz

    Froglube 4 oz. bottle $3.93 / oz

    Weapon Shield WS-4 4 oz. bottle $3.73 / oz

    Slip EWL 4 oz. $3.24 / oz

    Gunzilla 4oz twist top $2.99 / oz

Royal Purple 02514 Synfilm High Performance Synthetic Air Compressor Lubricant 2 oz. $2.87 / oz.

    Breakfree CLP 4 oz. $2.82 / oz

Lucas Oil 10006 Gun Oil 2 oz. $2.57 / oz

Recently switched over to Breakfree CLP myself. Was using generic high-temp wheel bearing grease before. It worked, but seemed to be a bit of a pain to clean. Breakfree keeps everything less gummy and cleans pretty well. Generally seems to stay put for a "oil" lubricant. I'll continue to use it until it's gone. Probably pick up another bottle after that.
