    So in theory could someone make thin grips that make it worth being thin? Or is the frame too wide in the grips? Not that there's a big enough market for aftermarket M grips.

    Numerich had great quality used mags for less than $30(around $23 if I remember right?). I can't check from work, but they may still have some.

    They are definitely thinner than a standard 92. Here's one reason why you might want one:
