    Appropriate Shot Timer Delay

What is an appropriate window to set your random start on your shot timer for?

I ask this because most of us are aware you can edge out an advantage with a more limited window, or set one so broad you almost get sleepy waiting for it.

As someone interested in firearms manipulation mastery - I'm always looking for the "right" or "efficient" way to control the variables in the drills I run.

For 2-3 months now I've run a 2 -5.5 second delayed start, knowing that setting the variables against me only prepares me better for more controlled environments I just updated the delay to 1.5-7.5 seconds, I think it's for the best but I'm trying not to nod off during the start delay.

What recommendations, experiences or practices would you folks suggest?

Hm. I just use the default in my PocketPro II.

I think it's 4.0s plus or minus a random time.

Seems the same as the timers settings during USPSA matches, but I'm not certain. I guess it would be good for dry practice to be same as at a match.

Interested in the answers you get.

I've just used 2.5 as a minimum and 4.5 as a maximum in the past. Just enough time to get set and not so long I get bored. Good topic though- I'd never thought of it.

3.5 - 4.5 for me. Just set it so it's a random enough to not be expected. I don't like them less than 3 because I have to have a little time to get into a start position, and anything higher than 5 is usually just wasting time.

I also just use the default Pocket Pro II delay.

I had to check; the Factory Default setting appears to be from 1 to 4.0s.

Not sure what the hell they were thinking when they picked 1 second as the minimum.

    USPSA 8.3.3 -- 1-4 seconds.

Rich, you will want to get in the habit of checking the USPSA rules, here is a link:

2.5 covers your question about coming to the match loaded.

1 second after you're already locked into start position and simply giving the RO the OK to beep you. Fuck that noise, I need to press my own button and get my hands up or whatever

My experience is the beep comes pretty quick, because they don't want to spend extra time not shooting -- unless they think you are creeping, in which case they will torture you.
