NRA Pistol is a very good first step - kudos for taking the step to attend this training. Here's a discussion concerning dry-fire, which can be performed at home: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?122-Dry-Fire

Check with some of the clubs in your area to find out if they host any gun games like IDPA or IPSC. There's usually always a lot of very helpful, skilled shooters who compete at these events.

Shooting competitions is a good way to test skills and how you preform under some pressure but they are not the place to "learn" how to shoot. A dedicated practice routine, if possible with a partner who is a better shooter, will teach you "how" to shoot.

Jumping straight into competition is like putting a 16 year old with a learner's permit on the race track. Learn to drive first under calm conditions and then test yourself under the pressure of competition.
