Help identify accessory on French HK 416

It's a minor thing but not figuring out what it is bugs me a bit.

On the top rail (photos below), near the front sight there is a small "thingy", for lack of a better word, that looks like it has D ring (on the right side, top) on it. Maybe it's moveable front sling attachment, maybe it's something else. Does anyone know?

Left side pic, thingy is about 4 slots behind the front sight.

Right side, thingy is about two slots behind the front sight.

It's a sling attachment. Magpul makes one that looks a lot like that, but there are others.

    Thanks.

So the sling is attached to the right front and I assume the rear attachment is at the end of the stock. That doesn't sound like an easy way for a right hander to sling the rifle or is the D ring on both sides? Can't tell from the pictures.

You can get much more of what you want with a kind word and a gun, than with a kind word alone.
