Thread: 1911 articles ?

    Question 1911 articles ?

Hello everyone - a 21 yo fellow who is a member of my extended family just got his concealed carry permit. He wants to buy a carry pistol and is leaning toward a Kimber 1911 -groan- I carried a 1911 for quite a few years and still have several including a couple of excellent Dan Wesson pistols, but have moved on. The 1911s are only shot at the range for fun. Now I primarily use Glock 9mms.

Could you please point to an article or two which clearly outlines the disadvantages of 'less expensive' 1911s ? The young man I mentioned is a senior in college and will be getting a degree in Mechanical Engineering. So, I'm looking for more than the typical "1911s are the Bestus !" or "1911s suck !" articles to pass on to him. Thanks -

I would check the Modern Service Weapons blog, though I think most of Hilton Yam's articles have been taken down.

Here's the thing - Kimbers can actually be quite expensive.

I'm at the point now where I compare prices to new Glock 19s:

"I can buy X many 19s for the cost of one of those ! Are you freakin' kidding me ? "

since he's a smart guy, and wants facts, i'd suggest he review the recent FBI paper on pistol calibers (they settled on 9mm, sorry to spoil the ending). a pistol is a tool to deliver bullets on target. that's the end goal.

if you can only afford one pistol, get a 9mm. the FBI report lays out in great detail why it's the best choice. not my crummy opinion, but based on tons of money and facts from studying it every which way possible.

ergo, if he can afford a 45 too, great. get a timer and some targets. do some timed drills with 9mm and 45. i'll be he'll shoot the 9mm better and faster.
