EXIF orientation ignored for image uploads

When taking a sideways picture, most cameras and phones now use an orientation sensor to note this in the output. Some cameras will rotate the image explicitly before saving. However, some others will just write the EXIF Orientation tag appropriately. In the latter case, it's the onus of the software to display it correctly by rotating.

I'm not sure where the blame lies here, but when uploading such EXIF orientation-tagged jpegs to pistol-forum I'm finding that the orientation is not displayed correctly. Redownloading them confirms that the EXIF orientation tag has been stripped.

Sorry, I should have searched first.

Thanks for the info. Yea, it looks like a very long-standing vbulletin issue. At least one plugin exists to try to reconcile it (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=318291).

Also looks like it's been fixed in VB5 (http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBV-13152).

Starting this year I switched my workflow to using feh to rotate the images before uploading. My understanding is that feh resets the exif orientation and then actually rotates the picture. However, when I uploaded my picture to my training journal today I found it rotated another 90 degrees to the right....

Yea, just checked with exiftool and it looks like feh documentation is full of shit. Sorry, should have checked that before posting.
