The Cold Steel shovel is the best one out there in my opinion. I think they're on sale at MidwayUSA right now.

$17 for shovel and $5 for sheath, no shipping > $25, great deal. I might buy a 3rd.

IIRC agricultural tools like shovels are 'protected', despite their more than passing resemblance and functional equivalency to medieval battle weapons.

Those shovels will fit right alongside your bucket seat in case you need to start digging as soon as you get out of the car.

I keep a folding shovel in the back of the 4Runner along with a few Gransfors Bruks axes / hatchets, a Bahco Laplander folding saw and a large blade or two from Becker Knife & Tool and ESEE.

Quick pic. I make the sling from stuff bought in eBay. That is also the best and happiest 1 inch webbing that I could buy, soft, strong, durable and comfortable. Don't cheap out there. I can dig up a link if anyone is interested.

In All Quiet on the Western Front, doesn't Ernest Borgnine give a lesson about it using a shovel like a mace?"

Um....yeah. A brief google search will provide pages of information regarding Mr Giduck's "bona fides" and other assorted shenanigans.
