    RFI: Hornady foster 1oz slug

I have seen pictures of Hornady slugs from hornady, status post gel impact (alleged). They show the same photo for the low recoil, magnum, and American white tail.

The slug shows radial expansion and is dished in a bit. This is absolutely different from a winchester foster at 1600fps that pancakes and fragments. The picture of the hornady is between that and the non deformity federal dp. In short, perfect for any open air or light cover shots.

Is this a slug that impacted at 1100fps from long range out of the LR loading, or is the "lead alloy" Hornaday repeatedly references actually sterner stuff than other fosters?

I have shot in excess of 50 Northern NY Whitetails from 50lbs to 260lbs, Winchester Foster 1oz at 1600 mushroom slightly but Remington break apart, turn into hollow centered donuts and or break into three segments. My father has shot over 100Whitetails with the same results. The Winchesters are slightly more accurate in our Deerslayer 37s,870 and my M4. Broadside shots ,ribs hits only, the Remington do not exit 50 yards and beyond. The Winchester exit, out to beyond 80 yards,on about 200lb deer. Don't rule out cheap Walmart 15 round boxes of Winchester 2.75 Forster 1oz slugs.

I use Remington slugger 1oz at 1560fps. The winchester I used was the 1700fps powerpoint. Specifically what slugger from rem did you use?

I don't have the Remington currently in my possession to photo box for exact specs. From memory Remington 12gauge 2.75" 7/8 ounce rifled foster slugs. The called them rifled but were made for smooth bore guns. I used to a have a dozen recovered slugs but I discarded them. They expanded to large 1.75" donuts.

The 3" 1oz slugs, and likely the 7/8oz slugs deform to the point of losing integrity as you note. I specifically chose the 1560fps 1oz slugs for that reason. This Hornady, though...

Well, the 1oz slugger remains king, and the Hornady didn't impress me. Here they are side by side after being fired into milk-jugs full of water at about 15 feet from an 18.5" pump. The Slugger penetrated 4 jugs fully, and was found in the 5th jug, the Hornady penetrated 5 jugs fully, and was found on the ground not having penetrated the 6th.

The deformity of the base of the un-fired Slugger is because I dropped it.
The "hole blown in the center" of the Hornady slug could not have been from anything but water and milk-jug. Hydraulic pressure is my guess. The slug did not impact anything but the jugs of water with any force, until it lay on the ground between them.

The 1oz 1560fps Slugger maintained its integrity very well, and performed as I have always seen it perform on random tests. I hope to shoot a deer with it this year next season.

The Remington 2.75" 7/8 oz drop white tails dead in their track. Most I have shot just collapsed. All of mine have exited and we're not recovered.
