Broken thumb piece but on S&W 586

I put a nice S&W 586 on lay away at my LGS. It's in very good condition except that the thumb piece nut is broken off. The thumb piece is still there and works but it looks like the screw head is broken off. How hard is it to replace? Any suggestions?

Are you talking about the cylinder latch nut?
    Number 20 here?

Yes, that's the part. Number 20. The cylinder match nut. I actually got thumb piece nut from the same diagram you linked to. My question is how to get the broken piece out?

I used a little Google fu and it looks like the stud on the boot is broken. It sounds like a good excuse for me to buy jerry kuhnhausens manual for S&Ws and a few new tools.

You will need to take off the side plate and all of the lock works. Have you ever done that before?

You are going to need this part then.
