DC Police Body Cameras Will Be Off as Officers Monitor Inauguration Protests

Man people got to get their story straight. Everyone's having a cow now around LA because of 2 cops forgetting to turn their body cameras on due to being distracted because a 16 year old "child" was pointing a freaking SHOTGUN at them.

Policy requires them to roll the cameras only when they make the decision to interact with somebody? Hopefully that's a special thing for the inauguration only and not a wider policy -- seems to me that taking away the minutes before the interaction removes it from its context. There's a whole bunch of not-doing-nothing that'll be missed before the Trump-led anti-protest force infringes on a peaceful AntiFa member's 1A rights.

Paragraph 3900.4 of their policy instructs that body cams record while officers monitor lawful gatherings/events for essentially the reason you wrote, just in different, more formal language.

    Feature, not a bug.

Most body worn and vehicle based cameras have pre record feature. Based on the settings, it automatically saves several seconds to several minutes of video before the time the officer actually turned it on. There typically is no sound during the pre-record time however.
