Near as I can tell, the distance from the end of my G19 barrel to the lip of the G17 holster is 3/4".
Since I don't have a G17, I don't know how much of that space can practically be removed on the shorter rig. 1/2" or so?

Concerning the wedge, I use a JMCK wedge on my DSG G17 and DSG clip on for the Shield.
I'm kind of waiting to see what Tom comes up with in his lab wedge-wise.
One of the things I like about his G17 holster is that I don't need a wedge to tuck the 19 as snugly as I like. (The claw takes care of that, it seems.) I do get a slight, but not what I would describe as uncomfortable, poke from the holster when sitting.
I have Tony's wedge on my JMCK "George". I did purchase a spare wedge from Mack, (Mastermind), but I have kept it as a spare for the "George" when the time comes. Without the wedge on the JMCK holster, neither my G26 nor G19 tuck in as snugly as I prefer. However, the G19 sized "George" is less noticeable when sitting due to the shorter length (and perhaps the wedge as well).
The way things have evolved, I tend to use the JMCK holster for my G26 and the DSG for the G19 (though each can accommodate both).
Each one performs yeoman's work at their tasks.
