....... Specifically, the DoD wants "biodegradable training ammunition loaded with specialized seeds to grow environmentally beneficial plants that eliminate ammunition debris and contaminants.".........

A lot of this nonsense will come to a screeching halt on 21 January.

The DoD is a lot smarter than people give them credit for being. With biodegradable training ammunition, they would reduce the cost, to the taxpayer, of future site mitigation and cleanup costs. Twenty years down the road, they could convert the range into some other use, or set up a range in a place where it would be overly costly to later clean it up.
If we have to march off into the next world, let us walk there on the bodies of our enemies.

Stephanie is right. The issue the DoD is traying to deal with is the clean-up of ranges. If you read the SBIR (I didn't click the link in the OP) the DoD is asking private companies to develop training ammunition for 40mm grenade and larger...most of the ranges for those weapons are hazardous clean up sites now. The DoD is spending a FORTUNE in trying to clean them up to convert them to other uses. Here in Mass we have two training areas near me (within 20 mins) that are no longer in use by DoD but they can't return them to state/local control or sell the land because of the hazardous materials on site.

BTW - because this is an SBIR the DoD pays NOTHING to the companies to develop. Only if they decide to actually purchase anything.

As for what materials could be used to form the ammunition, the DoD points to materials used for manufacturing water bottles, plastic containers and other composite plastics already on the market today.

Anybody else think this is idiotic?

Now your weapon will be an actual plowshare. Magazine limits will be bad for the environment. This could be fun.

Genius. Hope they find someone to produce this stuff cause as people have mentioned you have to deal with environmental issues with land use for training.

    Land remediation aint cheap!
