It's called reciprocal altruism. They think by their actions and maybe even their own sacrifice, they will make life better for others of their own kind. It won't help them as they go to jail (or suicide by cop) but society will change in the direction of their cause.
There is also a component of revenge. When fantasizing about the outcome, they get a dopamine surge as if they actually committed the action. Successful violence (killing the mammoth gives you a thrill and a hard on) as a reward for risking yourself (in this case for others).
