Thread: .22LR optic

    .22LR optic

Thought this might warrant its own thread. My search-fu was weak and I didn't find much covered before regarding rimfire optics.

This will be for my CZ Scout shooting paper from 0-100. Right now I'm leaning toward Leupolds 4x fixed and Vortexs Diamondback rimfire scope.

I'm ok with the cost of either and wouldn't really see the need to go much beyond that. I think 4x magnification is plenty but could see value in the variable as well. Does anyone have experience with either and could make a recommendation?

I have a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18X that has been a good scope. It has adjustable objective and can be focused close. I'm not sure I would buy a scope without AO any more. When you shoot at distance you will want more power. I'm using a fixed power 16X SWFA scope on my CZ. If you have youngsters shooting, a lower power is easier for them to find the window. I would get this one: http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/...eticle/reticle I like the Dead Hold BDC so you can shoot out to 100 yards with out adjusting the settings.

    What Bill said.
I have been fairly happy with my Leupold 3-9x33 on my CZ, but wish I had a bit more magnification at 100yds. If it will be mostly a walking around gun then it might suite you though. I wouldn't recommend any less in magnification at any rate.

Not sure it is worth $400. I got mine on sale for less. It is on CZ rings that seem to do the job, but I'm not a ring expert.

Two good resources if you want to obsess over it for a while:

I hesitate to mention it, but the scout is a neat little rifle already with the irons. Have you thought about getting a second 452 to put an optic on, like an American, while you still can?

EDIT TO ADD: The magnification advice from me was specifically for paper punching for groups at 100yds. If you are not going to be doing that then you don't necessarily need more power.

Something to be aware of. Some CZ's have 3/8 dovetails and some have 11mm dovetails. I couldn't find much of a source for 11mm rings to use with a 30mm scope. A one inch scope will probably be good for your purposes. Here is some info on dovetails. http://www.diproductsinc.com/Products.aspx?CAT=4268 I put a 25MOA base on my CZ because I want to be able to adjust turrets and shoot to 200 yards and beyond.

Good thoughts, appreciate it. The (supposed) primary users of this rifle are my young sons, so I kinda feel like a basic fixed optic would really be the easiest option for them. I'm a little surprised to see the suggestion for greater than 9x magnification at 100 yards. I've always felt 4x was quite adequate for midrange shooting. I'd be curious to hear that expanded upon.

As far as the irons go, yes, I'd like them to be able to use them well, but I do find that they're a little limiting. We'll continue to shoot it with the irons, but I think a scope will add to the fun factor which is really what it's about (for me). I need to do a bit more testing but the rifle's accuracy appears a bit worse that expected, at least in my hands.

I appreciate the thoughts so far.

J&P adapters, then use Burris Zee rings. Signature if medium height works, but low is the way to go if you can fit them. Lapping the lows is good if you can.

Lots of guys like the Nikon 3-9 AO EFR because you can focus in really close with it. I have one on a Savage and no complaints. Bells are kinda big, a Nikon trait.

For fixed, Natchez has a 4x Weaver that's probably decent for about $120 right now.

I have one of these: http://www.primaryarms.com/primary-a...dot-pa4-14xffp

On a CZ 455 Tacticool, with a Atlas bipod and a Silencerco can. It does very well with FGMM .22 ammo, and also likes the Eley Club and CCI subsonics.

I think I got the optic for under $200 shipped on sale. I wanted a FFP mil/mil scope, just like it's centerfire brethern.

It tracks in a repeatable fashion, and the optical clarity is acceptable for the price point. I doubt I will ever shoot it past 100 meters, so it fine works for me.

I'm a big fan of 2-7x optics on .22's. You can keep them dialed down to a lower power if for whatever reason you wanted to shoot at fleeting targets that disappear quickly, dial it up to find a squirrel at 80 yards, or keep it at a comfortable 4 or 5x for consistency shooting paper bulls.

Most of my 2-7s are dated so the info isn't current on who is making what by what name, model. I have Nikon, Burris, and two Leopoldo's in that 2-7 range. They ran me for ~$225 on the Burris up to $350+ on one of the Leupold. Nikon and Leopoldo glass is pretty comparable and I don't have complaints with either. The Burris is obviously the lower quality optic, and for popping critters, which this one is set up for, it does its job out to 150 yards or so. For paper, I'd select my Nikon simply due to a bare bones duplex reticle that makes shooting bulls eyes pretty straight forward. The Leupold both have heavy duplex which is nice for some basic Kentucky wind age/holds on rats at various ranges.

However you decide to roll, and of course, budget allowing, I'd look hard at a variable 2-7. Or even 3-9. Gives you the 4x currently considered, but also adds a degree of flexibility. How many times to we buy a toy gun for a specific purpose, only to find five years down the road it is doing something more? How shit works at my house anyway.

    Best of luck!

I'm using one of these on my Savage Mk II, supposedly made in the Weaver factory - http://www.clearidgeoptics.com/ultra-rm-s/1814.htm

It seems a well made scope that I am 100% satisfied with.

I have a 2-7 Leupold on a 22 magnum Ruger American Rimfire. It has good glass and isn't too bulky. I have a 3-9 Simmons on a matching 22lr Ruger (both have the shorter threaded barrels). The Simmons is ok for a $50 scope but eventually I'll get another 2-7 Leupold for it.
