No dangerous drop-offs on the Baldy hike. Just steep climbs.

Joshua tree is cool, but it's far enough from Oxnard I'd probably only go for an overnighter camping.

Surprised I forgot about Getty. I love that place. The biggest mind-blowing bit for me is the impressionists. I'd grown up seeing photos of the paintings, but being close enough to touch them (hands in pockets, kids!), seeing the 3D layering of paint that Van Gogh's hands actually laid down on the canvas, is amazing.

If you want laid back beaches (minus the people watching and education for the kids), go check out Manhattan or Hermosa Beach. Both places have plenty of good restaurants and bars.

If you go hike Griffith Park (The Hollywood Sign Trail is on the edge of the park), hop over to Burbank for lunch, dinner, or a studio tour.

Belmont Shores, next to Long Beach, has good restaurants, bars, and is very close to some nice, laid back beaches without a lot of crowds. Huntington Beach is fun for beach shopping and lots of people watching, down side is lots of people.

Have some In N Out "animal style" and some good carne asada tacos for me.

As far as the Getty......go to the old one that is the original. One of my favorite places. It is recreated from the Villa in Pompeii buried in volcanic ash. The new Getty.......meh.

Overall, a lot of good has been covered, just realize nothing is close to Oxnard. And....contrary to others, I love Disneyland.

Just a Hairy Special Snowflake supply clerk with no field experience, shooting an Asymetric carbine as a Try Hard. Snarky and easily butt hurt. Favorite animal is the Cape Buffalo....likely indicative of a personality disorder.

Sitting here thinking about CA food spots in that area...

Belmont Shore (LBC area) George's Greek Cafe is great: https://www.yelp.com/biz/georges-greek-cafe-long-beach

Seal Beach (next to Belmont Shore) go to Nick's Deli for awesome breakfast burritos: https://www.yelp.com/biz/nicks-deli-seal-beach

Huntington Beach must try is John's Philly Grille, couple other locations too: https://www.yelp.com/biz/johns-phill...ntington-beach

Santa Barbara I like La Playa Azul Cafe for Mexican: https://www.yelp.com/biz/la-playa-az...-santa-barbara

And if you're in the SB area one of my favorite wines is Rancho Sisquoc, go check out their winery: https://www.ranchosisquoc.com

Both the old and the new Getty have their charms. Call ahead to verify the old Getty is open; my group went there and discovered the place had limited admission and had sold out of tickets for the day. The old guy at the gate let us unprepared tourists in anyways, so hat tip to that dude. Shame they shut off the fountains and water displays.

The new Getty is just massive. You could burn a whole day there and still not get through it. Which is unfortunate as the traffic jam to get in will itself take a whole day to navigate.

One of the nice things about living in the area is you can drive there at off-traffic hours, and since it's just a nominal cost to park (or you can ride the bus), go for a couple hours if that's all you feel like.

This whole thread is making me homesick. I do love SoCal. It's just a shame about the politics.

El Tepeyac Cafe, 812 N Evergreen in Boyle Heights. Get a Hollenbeck Burrito......likely see many East LA gang members and cops. It's one of those "need to do once" to say you did.
