Estonia, Poland and Lithuania prepare for possible Russian invasion

Several news pieces have come up about several countries preparing their people for possible Russian invasion, printing information about how to spy on occupying Russians and gather info, build IEDs, and encouraging militias to prepare and train, since their militaries may not be adequate.

That's been going on for quite some time now. The Cold War never ended, it just took a few years to re-brand itself.

I can't imagine Putin is dumb enough to attack a NATO member. He's a power-hungry asshole but he's not completely stupid. He'd force NATO's hand.

Ex-iron curtain recent NATO members will be in for a lot of disappointment if they expect the USA and Common Europe to fight the Russians for them.

Sadly true I think. Despite the recent US buildups along the Russian frontiers, the whole red line thing is looking pretty weak recently.

Before the Baltic states were let into NATO, it would have been nice if the relevant members of the Clinton I and Bush II administrations had bothered to look at a map. Even the ones that come with a National Geographic would have been helpful.

Agreeing to defend the Baltics would be like the Russians agreeing to defend Baja California.

If we have to march off into the next world, let us walk there on the bodies of our enemies.

But we'd sure hit those nasty Russkies with sanctions by golly!

Out of curiosity - what do you all think Putin is going to get out of invading Poland (or even the Baltics) other than a whole bunch of dead Russian kids?

I don't know if it's still a strong motivator, but throughout the Great Game, territory for the sake of territory was sufficient. Sure, there were some other motivations attached (resources, access to certain geographic features, power projection), but a lot of it was sheer physical expansion of an empire. Some of it was purely "I want it so you can't have it" with various other powers.

Putin's a smart SOB and likely won't move until unconventional means have ensured conventional victory.

Putin won't invade Poland. He is satisfied with the current border. Nor do I think he will invade the Baltics--but he wants them to think that he might. Long term he'd like them as Russian satellites and if he can convince them that their NATO membership won't protect them, that could happen.
