The whole point of the springs (other than making the gun run) is to protect the other parts. I would err in favor of early rather than late replacement.

I replaced the RSA in my highest round count 42 at about 3,500 rounds. It was not at failure, and no issues with functioning. However, it did begin to seem a tad looser fitting and I decided to err on the conservative side. This was on a very early manufactured 42 and, correct me if I am wrong, I believe some of those RSA's were a fraction shorter than later manufactured RSA's.
