Yep, you got it right. Self-defense doesn't rise and set with the draw, but I sure think the draw has a lot more relevance to self-defense than a reload. The four drills are all dual-use vehicles for technical work and also reasonable variations of simplistic acts of abruptly drawing and incapacitating a single threat.

    Thanks. I appreciate the response.

Tagging in since I have a Mr White class coming and I just bought a range membership.

I would like to point out that the FAST is a test, not a drill.

If I called the FAST a drill somewhere, I sure didn't mean to.

Mr White or anyone else, are there any tips you'd provide for improving on the 2 to head? Is the best way to practice the draw to a smallish target without cheating the grip, then for the follow up shots work on something like Garcia dots? I find I either go too fast and drop tons of shots, or really slow to clean it.

This is just one of many possible ways of going about it, but here is where my mind goes on this:

I know you have worked your draw a lot and it's fast. Don't back off your draw pace one bit.

Dry practice your draw to a smaller target than a 3x5 or 4" circle. Maybe a spot, maybe a 2" circle. Sharpen your index with this.

Concentrate on stopping the gun smoothly, being sure your grip is finished and unmoving as early as possible, seeing the sights on and stopped enough, and finishing a smooth enough trigger press. Make sure you don't slow down the overall gross motion of the draw - devote your increased care to gripping right, stopping the gun, aiming, and triggering, most of that occurring toward the end.

I personally like this drill of mine - of course! - to work on the second shot dry. Especially in combination with also just pressing the trigger again, even if dead, mushy, or otherwise unrealistic. Both ways have their merits IMHO. https://pistol-forum.com/showthread....-Single-Target

It is under the Drills section of the pistol-training website. Under the FASTest section it says "The F.A.S.T. is a standard part of every pistol-training.com class. Students who can shoot the drill in less than five seconds with no misses twice are awarded a numbered commemorative challenge coin". I don't think drills and tests are mutually exclusive.

I'll go with what the creator of the FAST said to me and many others in person, thanks.
