I guess I look at life a bit different. To me, the question is not, "Why do you carry a gun?", but instead should be, "Why wouldn't you carry a gun?".
I carry as an on-duty LEO and as an off-duty LEO. I carried before I was a LEO and I'll continue to carry after I retire. I was raised believing that one should accept responsibility for one's life and actions. This carries over to one's personal security and the security of those around you.
One of the many things that the last 24 years of inter-city LEO work has taught me is that there are truly evil people in this world. To believe otherwise is naive...

This reminds me of a joke that I like very much.
A man was standing at the bus stop smoking a cigarette.
When another man approaches him and says, "You know, you shouldn't smoke, it is bad for you."
To which the smoker replies, "My grandfather lived to be 105 years old."
Non-smoker, "So, did he smoke every day?"
Smoker, "No, he minded his own damn business."

When Cofer Black was in the CIA's Directorate of Operations, he had to fly a lot. When someone next to him asked what he did for a living, he said he sold mortuary supplies.
I have found that same strategy to be effective when I wish to be undisturbed aboard an aircraft. One woman visibly recoiled when I mentioned it.
Ah, good times.
When I was about 15 or so, I thought it would be funny to get business cards made up that said, "[RevolverRob] Mortuary. You Stab 'em, I slab 'em. Mortician, Undertaker, Creamator of the Dead or Living." - I had about 50 of them made up and gave them to friends and family as gags. Maybe I should do it again...only this time I'll give them to people on airplanes...
I carry a firearm for self protection and protection of my family. My wife and I live in a very quiet town, don't go to malls, don't go to movies, etc, but I wear a seat belt despite never having needed one in more than 50 years of driving. I could and would live without being armed, but living in California it is also the duty of every 2A supporter who can get a concealed carry license to do so.
