Thread: Problem with a pistol (H&K)...

    Problem with a pistol (H&K)...

Yesterday I was shooting with a neighbor who is armed with an H&K 45CT.

It has a DA/SA trigger, but can be carried cocked & locked (condition 1) with
the use of the thumb safety.

This is how my neighbor carries his.

If you push the thumb safety past the "off" position, it will also de-cock
    the hammer.

We were shooting some drills (Magnum / Aiming for Accuracy / Casino) and
occasionally after firing a shot the hammer would follow the slide into the
    DA mode.

The pistol did not fire when the hammer came to rest.

To rectify the situation, the shooter thumb-cocked his pistol and continued
    on with the drill.

After the first few occurrences, I watched the shooter (right-handed) and
his thumb was not riding on the safety and therefore not inadvertently
    de-cocking the pistol.

I am not familiar with this (or any other) H&K pistol, but was wondering if
anyone else had seen and could explain what might be happening.

I'm going to suggest he take it to an gunsmith / armorer or return the gun
    to the factory for service.

    Thoughts' / suggestions?

    Thanks.

I would ask him if he messed with the internals at all. If he did return to factory. If that doesn't work contact HK

To rule out a thumb-hitting-controls issue entirely shoot the thing WHO too. I flag my thumbs on the 45 and still hit the decocker once in a great while.

If he wants to carry condition 1 I'd switch the gun over to whatever version is safety only (no decock). HK will do this for him, but he can also get the plate and do it himself if he wants to.

Likely cause is a worn hammer and / or catch piece. The edge where the two interface is what causes this. HK fixed my hammer follow without question.

Why not just use the pistol in stock configuration?

Is there a problem with HK45C guns with a DA/SA trigger being carried SA?

Problem may be a strong word. Two things can happen. When swiping the safety off you may be able to do it hard enough to decock the gun. And if you ride the safety like a 1911 the same thing can happen. The second part can be addressed by changing your grip, but if you're going to carry condition 1 I'd change the plate out to avoid decocking on presentation.

There was a run of 45c's that suffered the hammer follow issue a year or so ago. Contact HKI and have them do an RMA with a return label. This is a known issue and is covered under warranty. The owner must not shoot a lot, this issue has been known for quite awhile.

No, other than being overzealous in disengaging the safety, resulting in decocking.
