If the slide lock spring breaks down to where you can't grab it with some tiny pliers, the frame is toast. Had a friend break one in a 2nd gen 19 or 23 and Glock replaced it with a 3rd gen frame.

That's true, but it seems to be a very, very infrequent occurrence. Interestingly, the original spring had a wasp-waisted configuration; Glock broadened it out years ago so now its the same width throughout; increased durability would be my suspicion.
