Milk Stouts are interesting things. They use milk as food for the yeast, but yeast can’t digest lactose, so it mostly stays in the beer throughout the brewing process. Typically they are slightly sweet rather than dry and have a fuller mouthfeel than the typical English & Irish type. This one had a nice balance of espresso, chocolate, and malt notes with a lot of roasted grain coming through. It went very well with leftover Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing.

Son-in-law picked this up for me in Seattle; I hadn’t had this beer since leaving the PNW in ‘06.

Maritime Pacific Brewing Co. Seattle, WA “Jolly Roger” Christmas Ale, 9.3% ABV
It’s one of the better domestic Christmas Ales I have enjoyed.

My recent haul was sort of a 50/50.

The Mas Agave Classica was too sweet. The Medival Wit taste like turpentine. The Maui was decent. The 2SP was pretty good. The Winding Path was really good, not too sweet like some Shandies can be.

    Cameo by Journey.

Of course you had to drink them all to figure out which were good…

This is a US domestic take on a Belgian Dubbel style. The Belgian yeast is fed on rock candy, and it tastes like it. It’s a fully credible contender for the style. It does make me wonder, though. Does any place in Belgium make a good US West Coast style IPA? This world without borders can be pretty confusing.
