Cadet charged in Texas City police academy shooting that injured 3

TEXAS CITY, Texas - A cadet has been arrested and charged in connection with an accidental shooting Thursday at a police academy in Texas City.
According to Texas City police, cadet Clayton Whatley had a loaded gun in his backpack. When he reached inside his bag, the gun fired, police said.
Anyone have more details on this ?

    What a dumbass.

Having worked at FLETC, we were VERY strict on live weapons. Live guns issued on the range, when done shooting, clean guns and “peg” them (put them on a numbered rack by class roster number). Then holster up a red gun for class. (See photo of class PEG board) No one leaves the range until the senior instructor has counted off that all guns have a chamber flag and are pegged in the propper order. Once he counts, THEN the class can gonto the next training evolution.

Found with a live gun off the range? Immediate loss of job, escorted off campus. We had 6000+ students per year at fletc. Can’t afford mistakes.

This kid has no one to blame but himself.

    Side note:
We had a kid at FLETC they called Mongo. Just a big old corn fed boy. On a weekend, off duty, he is in town at a hotel with his wife and some class mates. They had just been issued pistol lights, and he was showing how the light can prevent the gun from going out of battery in a contact shot.

He proceeded to center punch himself with a personally owned Glock 19. His class mates paid attention in TacMed class, and they saved his live. Soooo, he recovers, and wants to come back. No way... right?

Well, according to his lawyers, no where in the code of conduct does it say you CANT shoot your self while off duty, off campus. He legally possessed the gun, and there was no policy against shooting himself. Sooo, he recycled and kept his job.

He was actually a nice guy, and I had not problem with him. But the other instructors filled me in on the back story, since the shooting happened before I got to Fletc. I was there for his second trip and graduation.

I am sure the code of conduct has been amended to include “don’t shoot yourself off duty”.

FLETC is a little different as it is a "bubble" like a military base .

According to the media reports, the incident in the OP occurred in the evening at a police academy run by a community college. It may have just been night fire time but it could very well be one of the nights/weekend academy programs run by community colleges for those putting themselves through the academy. . In which case the students would be providing their own guns although even in those type academies the range and the campus are often in separate locations. The lack of the FLETC type "bubble" makes the "no live weapons in the classroom" thing even more important.

I attended basic at FLETC in 2002. A FLETC staff person did our first day orientation. They expressly stated that you could not cheat on tests. Apparently, an agency had fired someone for cheating on a test. That person successfully sued and got their job back because no one had ever told them they couldn't cheat.

Things have really gone downhill at FLETC. It used to be, back in the early 80's, that you'd get canned for sneaking females on to the base in the trunk of your car. (Or being caught with a firearm that hadn't been checked.) I never cheated so I don't remember if it was a thing.

I don't think I've been there since around 1998 or so, or whenever it was that the Falcons played Denver in the Super Bowl.

Doesn't sound like I'd miss the experience for the most part.

They actually still tell that story to new trainees during the firearms safety blocks. The way they tell it, the paramedics who responded to the hotel room told the guy’s friends that he was likely going to die and the surgeon who worked on him didn’t have much hope either.

Now, the PowerPoint specifically states that the no live weapons policy also includes off base hotels.

“For every stupid rule, there was a stupid agent.” Live your life to not end up as a training story, like Mongo did. Also known as, live your life not to end up a verb... Miranda, a name that became a verb. Giglio, a name that became a verb. Kalkines, name that became a verb. Don’t let your name become case law.

DanM, Did they tell you the about the $1.6 million dollar testicle?

Also, are you going to finish with a full class? Or have you lost anyone yet?

No, they haven’t told us about the $1.6 million testicle. I bet that’s an interesting story.

We’ve lost two so far. Both due to injuries during defensive tactics but we’ve still got nine weeks left to go. Everyone’s doing their best not to get injured or injure anyone else.

We lost one during a basketball game. Sounded like a gunshot and we looked around to see what happened? Turns out his achilles tendon detached and rolled up his leg. He was medically discharged. I don't know if he was ever recycled by his agency. Shame, nice guy.

We lost some knuckleheads to things that knuckleheads do. I don't remember anyone getting injured during actual training, however.
