Thread: Aimpoints in heavy rain

    Aimpoints in heavy rain

Yesterday afternoon, my wife and I were shooting carbines, when heavy rain started. Being Alaska, we continued, both because it rains a lot, and we thought it would be good gear testing.

I was using a 30mm Comp M3 and my wife a T1. Neither of us used covers on the optics. With the M3, water was collecting and pooling inside the lip of the Aimpoint, where the T1 without much of a lip, was not collecting water. I think for that reason, we could see through it better, and the T1 seemed easier to shoot in the rain. Anyone else have experience and an opinion on a T1/2 vs 30 mm Aimpoint in these kind of conditions?

I was bummed that I had left my 6720 and RMR in the cabin, as I would have liked to tested it in the same conditions.

I ran my H1 in some pretty crappy weather conditions, including a full two day class where the rain didn't stop, at all. Same class guy had an aimpoint rds, I do not know what kind I assume it was a Comp-type model. He had to use his thumb in glove to wipe off the water so he can see, where as I did not have any issues.

Sounds like it could be similar to what we experienced yesterday with the M3.

If you're going to use it in heavy rain often, I'd suggest the newer T2 or H2 with the clear caps.

My T2 has a clear cap on the back but a solid one on front -- am I missing something new?

So it is raining hard here, and my wife commented it was perfect weather to test the RMR. I started to get geared up to march around in the rain, and then thought it would be more comfortable to just stick the rifle outside. Then I thought some more, and figured no reason to soak a rifle, to test a RMR in a QD mount. Stuck just the RMR outside for a while, resulting in this.

Messing around with the dot on, and then turned off, it was better than I was expecting. The best solution, though, seems to have it mounted so you could remove it fairly quickly and go to irons in the worst weather. That is a lot easier to do on a carbine than on either pistol or shotgun.
