Border Patrol Agent Brutally Attacked in Arizona — Alien Shot Dead

According to the sources, three men illegally entered the U.S. and crossed the Colorado River when they were detected. An lone Border Patrol agent responded and one of the three men attacked the agent. The alien grabbed for the agent’s service weapon. In the process of the agent protecting his service weapon, the alien grabbed his radio and began beating the agent about the head. The alien also grabbed the agent’s baton and used that to beat the agent as well.

The Border Patrol agent was left with head injuries and a severe laceration above his right eyebrow that required multiple stitches. The agent’s hands were also swollen after the life-threatening attack from the alien. The agent responded with deadly force and the alien attacker is now dead.

One of my former co- workers survived a similar experience back in the 1990's - substitute a grape fruit sized rock for the radio and baton and substitute a Ruger GP-100 for this agents HK P2000.

This is not a daily occurrence but it happens regularly. Rock Throwing is more common. Assaults on BP Agents average between 100 and 150 per year,

Attacks on Agents are most common by criminal illegal aliens (those who already have criminal history), then smugglers, and rarely by average / non criminal illegal aliens.

Smugglers will usually try to either ditch their load and flee or try and blend in and go unnoticed. Violence against Agents involving smugglers usually occurs close to the border when they are trying to get south, to sometimes include cover fire from south of the river.

Depending on the sector, you also have Rip/Robbery crews looking to rob drug and alien smugglers and Mexican Military incursions etc.

Last June a U.S. CBP helicopter was forced to land near Laredo after taking fire from South of the border. Since these Agents work for the CBP Air and Marine branch, they would not be included in the BP assault stats.

Violence was pretty rare where I worked as it's bad for business. Usually smugglers with dope will drop and run. Sometimes straight down a damn mountain... Of course you have a random smuggler or group that gets cornered up in the mountains that will throw rocks or even the groups trying to protect turnbacks as they run for the line. Rarely is it directed, but it happens. The biggest threat is like that any other officer faces, the unknown. I've popped multiple groups of 5-20 with no problems and then I've had two guys who just wanted to keep running and then put up a short struggle. You never know what will come of an arrest.

This agent had the will to fight and stayed in it. Good for him and I hope like everyone else that he has a speedy recovery.
