    Week 168: Favorite Weapons

    Week 168: Favorite Weapons

Results may be posted until July 10th, 2016.

Designed by: JHC and Gabe White, inspired by Miyamoto Musashi
    Range: 7 and 25 yards
Target: USPSA Metric or IDPA target
    Start Position: Ready
Rounds Fired: Varies (at least 20)

This is intended as a short comparison of a shooter's capability with different handguns. The drill is shot from ready and uses no more than five shots per string in order to be capacity and holster-neutral.

The scoring will be very simple: score = time, plus penalties. A/B/-0 zones are no penalty. C/-1 zone is + 0.5 seconds per shot. D/-3 zone is + 1.5 seconds per shot. Misses are + 2.5 seconds per shot. No make up shots allowed.

Pick at least two guns to use for this drill. More is great too.

String 1: Place the target at 7 yards. At the start signal, shoot 3 body and 2 head. Record your hits and time.

String 2: Place the target at 25 yards. At the start signal, shoot 5 body. Record your hits and time.

Repeat String 1 and 2 for each gun you're going to use.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

    Target used
    Gun used
Score (time plus penalties) for String 1
Score (time plus penalties) for String 2
    Total score (String 1 + String 2)
    Anything you noticed

Please report the above for each gun you used!

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Observations: I can pick up a 1911 for occassional slow fire or close range and get by. But apply speed at a more challenging task like 25 yards promptly and the wheels come off snatching that nice crisp SA trigger. Somewhat the same challenge with the Sig in SA trigger mode.

The KKM compensator allows you so see so much so flatter with less recoil I can outrace myself. BES did NOT have that problem.

The .357 Sig recoil seemed to slow me down enough that I kept up better with my trigger presses.

I carry a G26 more than anything else nowadays. Cool.

The comped G19 is just so damn much fun to shoot. Getting accustomed to control one's pace better and it should be lights out. After the DoW I shot The Test with the comped 19 and shoot it once; clean in 5.64 sec (97 score) which may be my fastest clean Test.

    Guns - Glock 17 rtf2, Glock 19 gen 4, Beretta 92 WCBT

I ran each string 3 times with each gun so that I could get an average for each gun.

    Glock 19 gen 4

    7 yds - run 1 - 2.9 clean/ run 2 - 2.58 clean/ run 3 - 2.52 clean/ AVERAGE - 2.66

    25 yds - run 1 - 7.39+3c=8.89/ run 2 - 5.62+2c=6.62/ run 3 - 5.32 clean/ AVERAGE - 6.94

    Totals run 1 - 11.79/ run 2 - 9.2/ run 3 - 7.84/ AVERAGE - 9.61

    RTF2 Glock 17

    7 yds - run 1 - 2.62+1c=3.12/ run 2 - 2.49+1c=2.99/ run 3 - 2.57 clean/ AVERAGE - 2.89

    25 yds - run 1 - 5.93+1c=6.43/ run 2 - 4.86+1c=5.36/ run 3 - 5.18+2c=6.18/ AVERAGE - 5.99

    Totals run 1 - 9.55/ run 2 - 8.35/ run 3 - 8.75/ AVERAGE - 8.88

    WCBT Beretta 92

    7 yds - run 1 - 2.79 clean/ run 2 - 2.53 clean/ run 3 - 2.45 clean/ AVERAGE - 2.59

    25 yds - run 1 - 5.74+2c=6.74/ run 2 - 5.46+2c+2d=9.46/ run 3 - 5.74+1c+1d=7.74/ AVERAGE - 7.98

    Totals run 1 - 9.53/ run 2 - 11.99/ run 3 - 10.19/ AVERAGE - 10.57

I shot this right after warming up with the Defoor Pistol test #1 so the G19 was closest to cold and the beretta was most warmed up, albeit a different trigger system. I only shoot the beretta when I need a fun day away from my normal training/practice guns. Apparently I was anticipating like crazy and pushing shots all over with it today. I am generally more confident with my 19 then my other glocks, but a few slow first runs on each of the strings brought the averages up. My other 17 is off getting stippled and chopped so I didn't have it to compare.

    Targed used: USPSA Metric

    HK VP9:
    String 1: 1.41 clean
    String 2: 2.49 1C = 2.99
    Total: 4.40

    STI Trojan 1911 .45
    String 1: 1.68 clean
    String 2: 2.97 2C = 3.97
    Total: 5.65

I am always intrigued to see how I do with different guns, so I ran this at the start of my practice session today. I haven't shot a 1911 in the better part of a year, so I was particularly curious to see how it would measure up to a gun I shoot all the time. Turns out there is an advantage to regularly practicing with a specific gun. I wasn't expecting to demolish my time with a 1911 quite as much as I did when shooting the VP9. I'm sure with a little focused practice on the 1911, I could bring those numbers a lot closer. Most of the time difference was either an issue of manupulations, or more difficult sight tracking with the increased recoil of a .45 at longer range.

I am looking forward to seeing Gabe's results with the other 9mm Glock frames as compared to the usual G34.

    String 2: 5.71
    Total: 7.75

    G19
    String 1: 1.74

    Observations:

The G19 with KKM comp is fast as shit....

Also, I need taller sights on my 320. It's shooting 5 inches high at 25.

    Talionis,

Your VP9 total is super impressive. Great shooting! Just curious, how do you have it configured for competitions ?

See that? He's with me. LOL I about pissed myself watching his consecutive clean 25 yard runs just over 4 seconds.
