It is great that Astro was waiting for you back at the LZ=, possible wonder where you guys were and why you didn't at least leave her some water.

I wonder where she went? Of course I doubt she will talk, and she somehow managed to disable her tracker other than the "completed her goal message", so likely we will never know.

    What breed is she?

Vizsla. I think we all wish we had water with us, but only my wife did in her pack. We didn’t anticipate getting separated.

Without water around, and the predators, not sure how long she could have made it out there without us. Really glad we didn’t need to execute that plan.
    I love that commitment.

Glad it worked out. That dog is a trooper.

Have you considered carrying shortwave handhelds in case you and your wife need comms and cell service isn’t working?

We have installed radios in the aircraft and hand held radios in our survival vests, but don’t have all that stuff out hiking when we have cell coverage.

We had been using the Whistle app to get fitness activity on Astro, but apparently missed an update relating to GPS position. Got it, and all is back to normal on tracking. This shows her morning and evening hike one day earlier in the week.

Charlie learned their was a new “Pro” version available of Whistle and upgraded. In the process, we saw some of her stats since inception when we got Whistle over three years ago. Doesn’t include her days off the grid in AK.

Guess we were with her for most of those 5,624 miles!

The new Whistle even does some funny stuff.

In the desert, looking for water.
I’ve spent hours trying to find my bird dog before, only to find her sitting under my truck. Like, “what? I wasn’t lost. You were lost! I just got tired and came back to the truck!”

That's hilarious. If they made it for a cat, it would could just have "licking", "sleeping", and "eating".

Our local club, last minute, decided to hold a USPSA match today. When we saw the number of shooters and how many were from out of town, we decided to pass, and continue to do our part with social distancing for at least a few more weeks. It is interesting that the demographic of USPSA shooters mostly overlaps with the definition of those most vulnerable to Covid complications.

Taking advantage of the great weather, we headed out in the desert for a hike with Astro. The desert in western AZ can be surprisingly remote.

Our landing spot for the hike is a Cub landing strip my wife pioneered. You can see faint marks from the Bushwheels.

Astro is always impatient for the humans to get going.

Our plan was to hike a double track path up to a saddle to our southeast. While we hang out in the junction of the Mohave and Sonoran desert ecosystems, this area was more Sonoran as you can see from the vegetation. Mandatory PDW reference, I had one.

The desert was in full bloom, and there were plenty of things to interest the bird dog’s nose.

Smooth handling of the Jetranger. I've only got 10-15 hours of helicopter time, most of it in a Hughes 500 and an OH-6. I've flown a couple 206's, and had a hard time getting used to the hydraulically-boosted controls in the amount of time I spent in them. I was all over the place.

My wife was flying and shows promise.

Of course she is an ATP Rotorcraft and has been flying turbine helicopters over 15 years.
