Sunday was a great weather day, and we headed out to our remote cabin. This is exiting Lake Clark Pass.
As sometimes happens with high pressure this time of year, there was fog this morning, and we were zero zero until noon. The clouds broke up enough we could head to the hills for a ridge climb mid afternoon. This is our landing spot.
It is a pretty steep climb and you just grunt it out. The footing is wonderful with low tundra and small rocks.
Astro was running like crazy chasing ground squirrels and searching for ptarmigan. They were past prime, but we found patches of blueberries.

Astro was generally within 400 yards of us, tearing up the hillside. We were making great progress, really enjoying the surroundings.
Charlie had the pack and I carried the shotgun. We both had pistols with an Acro.
You can see the helicopter down below.

(I have to do this in multiple posts because I have very sketchy sat internet)
Reaching the top of the ridge, we had a great view all around.
On the way down, Astro went AWOL in some thick brush chasing birds. It is amazing how she seems to know where we are in case she needs protection, but will range pretty far when there is stuff of interest to her.
She ended up down at the helicopter, resting in the shade, pretty much tuckered. A tired Vizsla is a happy Vizsla!

It was a gorgeous day in the SE today. Did some IOE up and down the coast JNU-YAK-CDV-ANC. Nice day to be outside or flying.
Working diligently to enlarge my group size.
It was a nice day all over Alaska. Probably one of the warmest end of Augusts I can remember. It got down right hot on the garage roof I was framing. Still too hot to even think about moose hunting.
Anyone remember about where the pics are of the bear chasing Astro? I was trying to show my wife, but can't seem to find them in scrolling through 50+ pages of posts.
"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells." Robert Ruark
Wanted to take a moment to brag on Astro, our 12 year old Vizsla. She used to have a fitness goal, as measured by "Whistle" her gps tracker, to run 100 minutes or more a day. We have gradually reduced that goal as she has gotten older, and now it is 60 minutes.
She made goal again today, but the cool thing is today was 365 days in a row making goal!

We shot a two day match at the Rio range in Mesa, AZ this weekend, and camped in our Sprinter at Usery Park across the street. It is a beautiful park, and we arrived after dark Friday, with temps still in the low 80’s. We kept our heads on a swivel and used lights moving around outside as it seemed a rattler rich environment. All around there were groups camped carrying on as if there were no hazards in the desert. Saturday night, we took Astro for a walk shortly after dark, and part way back encountered a Western Diamondback crossing the road in the campground, slithering into a fully occupied campsite. We alerted the people, which caused some consternation, but we would have felt remiss not to say anything. We were stunned in how quickly that snake could go from crawling to coiled and ready to strike. Impressive creatures.
